An exchange says that chops, birds end dry fish are most delicate when broiled in paper. Use heavy white note paper spread with olive oil or but ter. When the article to be broiled ‘s laid therein, salted and peppered, the edges of the paper case should be turn- ed over several times like a little hem, and pinched together close t > the meat. The paper will char a long time before igniting, and the contents will be pasted in their own juices. ‘The time requ'red for broiling in paper is usual- ly eight minutes. When the paper Is well browned, the contents will be done to a turn—juicy, delicate and digest- ible for even the stomach of an invalid. Serve in its envelope, which conserves the heat and juice to the moment of eating. The large fillet of chicken broiled in this way is delicious and easy of assimilation, Lamps. Every good house-keeper takes a pride in caring for the lamps and keep- ing them in the best possible condition. Lamp flues can be hardened and ren- dered less likely to break by putting them in a pantul of cold water, and al- lowing it to heat gradually. Boil them ten minutes, cool slowly, and they will be ready for use. A little hay or straw should be put in the bottom of the an to prevent breaking, and flues should not be allowed to teuch each other. A clear light is not only cheerful and pleasant, but it is better for the eyes than a dull flickering one, and it ts im- possible to have clear lights unless the flues and burners are kept clean and bright. Wash the flues every morning if the lamp has been used the night before, and wipe dry with a soft cloth that leaves no lint. Keep them full of oil, and put a small piece of camphor in the oil receptacle to pre- vent an unpleasant odour and improve the illuminating power. An_ excel- taste, also three eggs. For thickening reserve part of an egg, into which sift flour enough to keep from sticking. Rub between the hands until free from lumps. Stir into the soup. Serve with soda biscuits. Marketing Notes It requires an experienced house- wife to distinguish between good and inferior bacon. The best bacon is fine in grain and of a bright pink, wita firm white fat. Bacon which has yellow fat and any suspicion of a musty odor, should not be purchased ; and if bacon is very highly colored, and the fat in raw in appearance it has not been salt- ed long enough. Spots Cleaned by Chalk. French chalk, tooth chalk, chalk pencil—any chalk—is an agent for cleansing in an endless variety of ways. Rub it into grease spots on dresses, wall paper, anything ; it may be rubbed into spots, such as molasses, with anex-- cellent effect. It disintegrates the dirt so that it can be scratched or rubbed out. Even on washing dresses this easy remedyis well worth applying Not only spots, but the hand rubbed soiled parts may sometimes be restored or at teast improved. Rubon the chalk and hang the garment away over night or for days, to be brushed clean when used again.—Canadian Home Journal. Affer Dinner To assist digestion, relieve distress after eating or drinking too heartily, to prevent constipation, take Hood’s Pills Sold everywhere. 25 cents, ———! + Much lent method of cleaning the burners is to dissolve a tablespoonful of pearline, in a quart of water, and boil them in these suds ten minutes, after which they may be wiped dry with a cloth and willlook like new. This should be done once a week, and if you begin when the burners are new, they will not tarnish or turn black as many burners do after using them a few months. ‘This treatment will keep the small tubes on each side of the wick clear of the gummy substance that collects in them, improving the lights, and lessening the danger of explosion. Use a shade on the lamp whenever you are reading at night, and the best colors are green and pink. Crepe paper makes beautiful shades and is so inexpensive that one can afford to cast the shades aside when they are soiled. These shades improved the appearance of the lamps, and save the eyes wonder- fully.—Adyv.
