True. they had. a decline of about 50pm- cent. but the price from which they declined was an artificial one and not at all healthy, but the low was too low so now there has been a. rebound and that. rebound has cheered the whole fur frater- nity. Jack Kennedy, well known rep- resentative for Purina Fox Chow. 1s constantly on the go and of course has an opportunity to lee a great many foxes. The other day in conversation with 111m he re- marked that Dr. J. P. Lents has a ranch of foxes that would do credit to anyone. "He is coming very fast i11 the fox world," said Jack. "He has picked out a bunch to do him a lot of good." W. L. Brenton. Dairy Superin- vtcudent. is feeling pretty good be- cause of the compliments he is re- ceiving about his dfoxes. Several .buye1-s have been endeavouring to ‘purchase :1 pale silver pup from him and offers o! $200 or more are turned down without his batting an eye. As a matter of fact, we do not believe that money would buy that pup from W. L. It is not the only good p11p that Mr. Bren- ton has had this year, all his pro- duction has been good, but some are outstanding. They were raised 111 H. J. Kennedy's ranch, South- port. and Mr. Kennedy's son was the caretaker and of course he deserves credit: for that part of the work. The remainder will go to Mr. Brenton for selecting good breeding stock. The sire was bred by Will Mac-Lead, East Royalty, and the dam is by a Johnstone Bros. male out of n Bovyer fe- male. The MacLeod male sired six litters and there were no poor 01195. Jack likes ‘Halsey Hooper‘: foxes mighty well. He pronounces them as the best collection of half-sil- vers he has ever seen. They have good black necks and clear spark- ling silver. Asked to give an estimate of the curtailment of breeding stock he gave it as his opinion that 10 per cent, could cover the lessened number of foxes kept. We argued fin- a time about it, the writer contend- 111g thatit would assuredly be more than that in this Province, but Jack stuck to his-figures, saying that while some people were cut- ting down others had gone out and bought better foxes than their own 11nd replaced with them. An awful lot; of foxes changed hands this fall. he said; "there must have‘ been several thousands." "People seemed to be on Hie hunt; continually for good bright silvers): Dr. A. M. Show, director of mar- keting services, Dominion Depart- ment of Agriculture, has written an article 1m Canada's fur outlet. giving figures showing the number and value of the principal fur ex- ports from this country. These are cxtractsz-“Canadab principal out- let for furs is the United King- dom. Our tradc there has devel- oped over a long period of time and our distribution channels are both friendly and efficient. Furs in 1hr‘ United Kingdom are still sonnwvlint of a luxury product, al- though the reduction in prices that has taken place in recent years has considerably broadened the market. Silver and black fox furs are indny the favorites. From the standpoint. oi’ both style and eco- nomy they have great. fe-minitie 11111112111, as they can be wo1-n with any color combination and by either day or night. Increasing production has steadily lowered the price and in the United King- dom retail prices have now reach- 1111 a level at which silver foxes are 11o longer confined to the rich. Canada's principal competition in the United Kingdom comes from Norway. Friendly trade ex- perts say that Canadian silver fox quality has deteriorated and that many buyers now regard Norweg- ian foxes being on the average more satisfactory. A fair percent- age of Canadian silver foxes are developing a brownish tone to- gether with some coarseness. We believe this change is serious and that it warrants immediate inves- tigation not only in Canada but perhaps in Norway as well. Practically all Oanndian_!u1-s lose their identity when they go into manufacturing establishments. Investigations in retail stores sat- isfledus that ferw dealers knew the country origin of the furs they sell, although some will say, this is Can- adian tor Norwcginni. In spite of some effort, no way has been found to tag Canadian furs so that the retail purchasers can be sure oi getting a genuine Caniudian pro- duct. Canadian mink has been consid- ered the best in the world. We have heard some reports. however. that owing to unclean conditions manufacturers are only able to use a small portion of the b111-k 111 certain mink, the bellies turn 111 yellow or light brown tones, mak- ing thorn unsuitable for i-cullygood garments for which regularity oi color is of paramount importance. It would appear from a. distance that; the remedy lies in cleaner quarters." The Saturday 1311-0111111: Post, is carrying t1 series of articles 11111111- experiexice of J. T. Llttlehzntn, 1111 American mining engineer of out- standing ability, who has for i111- past ten years been in charge of most of thc gold production work in Russia. Tho writer would ad- vise our readers to peruse the 111-- ticles 11f they have an opportun- ity. as they give s. tremendous in- sight into conditions in Russia. There are hundreds of thousands of prospectors out in quest. of gold and the territory covered would be greater than the area of Quebec and Ontario. Gold has been found in plenty but no figures are being released by the Government and the American engineer of course felt that he could not conscienti- ously give them out either. 'I‘he1-1- is no doubt that. it the proper methods of mining are followed 11p Russia through its gold production will in the nextten years possess enough of the yellow metal to buy luxuries in quantities. It. would seem, therefore, that she will be in a position to not, only take care of her own silver fox production b11t also buy from other countries! Contrary to the regular cnstoni. prospectors are allowed a 011115111- crnble stake 111 the gold they dis- cover and are given the right to purchase luxuries. in fact any- thing that is for sale in the gold stores which stock the higher grade articles and luxuries. Mr. Littlchmn states that sabot- age is very frequent. in Russia and those who were executed probably deserved their fate. I11 seems i11- comprehensible to us that peoplc would deliberately slow up and injure production in their own country, but then if you read the article you will get an insight. into the Russian mind and find out why they think that. way.
