Everett's large m ‘jority has taken every one here by surprise. What the Telegraph Says About tt Sr. Joun, Oct. 21. The St. John Telegraph thia morning says: “Toe Liberals of St. John city and county have lost a battle. Where we had hoped for victory we have met defeat. This isaiways unpleasant; but such are the fortunes of war an‘ politics, Few, even of the most successful are permitted to win. Having behaved themselves with moderation when victorious in previous e.- counters, the Liberals of St. John well know how to bear a temporary reverse with philosophical fortitude. The cause is not lost, the principles contended for by the Liberal party in the contest re- main and are still the hope of the country. There are some circum. stances surrounding the contest which doubtless tended to the Liberal defeat which may not have been fully considered heretofore. Among these are the changes in the electorate since last Dominion elec. tion in 1882. Since that date the electoral lists of the constituency have been swelled by some eighteen hundred names, which, with those who fill the room of deceased electors, will make two thousand new names in ali. S> much new blood would at any time impart with it an element of uncertainty into a contest among the new voters. An active Young Men's Liberal-Conservative Association had been working for mouths past, while no corres- ponding Young Liberal Association had any existence. In this respect the Minis- terial party had great advantage, and the lesson should not be lost on the Liberals of St. John. King Thebaw in Jeopardy. New York, Oct. 20.
