Our despatches state this morning that there is talk of arbitration although mine owners state they will only confer with the men. The strike leaders on the other hand declare they will insist upon the recognition of the Union. The order to strike was issued by the executive ef- flcers of the United Mine Workers of Am- erica to all the Union miners and em- ployees in the anthracite coal region of Pensylvania. The union men are said to number 140,000. and upon these wage earn- ers half a million persons depend for bread. The strike order was reasonable' and pacific in its tone, and is to be commend- ness and violence, but it is too earlytosay whether or not the strikers will follow. this wise advice in all cases.
