Mr. JOHN AGNEW: We havflistened to a very interesting speech from Mr. McFadyen. I do, not think that onelialf of us ‘here today realizes what the fisheries might mean. or ogglitto mean, to the Island. Take the case of Lunenburg. Quite l_ _ illtol their Beet off our shores; they go back ncarly every ~year & down with fish. In Augustwo have a large fleet of 100 sail of fisher- _lnen from New Brunswick, What are our people doing? Practically nothing. 'llliese Lunenburg men come and take our fish from our very door, cure them lniksend them back to us to eat! If you go into a grocery store in Charlotte- town you can hardly get anything but boneless cod and hake imported from Nova Scotia or New Brunswick and you won't get one pound of Prince Ed- we-rd Island boneless fish. Why? Simply because they have the markets there. We are leaning back and watching them utilize our own product, and it is up tothe Government to help us in this matter. Some years ago, be- fore the dairy industry got to the state in which it is now, they inaugurated cheese factories. and when the farmer saw lie could make money out of them he went into it lbimself. Why should not the Government put up a plant and show us how to cure fish and how to prepare them as boneless iisli so as to get a market? If that were donc, instead of a fisherman making $300, on the Raw Material, if-' he had the finished product he would realize $600. You may bring all the men you like hero, but if they cannot make as much as they do in other places, they will not remain, in the same way as on the Qrm;-if you cannot offer a man the same inducements as be had elsewhere heiwill not stay with yon. ln Alberton wc have a splendid harbour right in the centre of the fishing, capable of accommodating 100 boats. We have lots of room if we could only get the Government to put up an up~to-date plant; they could take so much out of the expense. and turn the plant over to the Hshermen. If the Government did that the people would take hold of the btisinesa the same as they did in the case of the dairy lndustry. Now, we came here today to do something practical, and I would move the following resolution: i "Resolved: That it is the duty of thc Federal Government to extend to the fishermen of tho Province all possible encouragement and assistance. that they can be instructed in tlio latest and most sclciitiilc methods of qltchlng and curing his products; that lie bc assisted in the maintenance of Gold storage facilities, and afforded cvcry facility for the prompt transmiss- ion of his fresh hah to thc best market." With reference to cold storage, l iniglit say that wc had one a. few years ago but it was too expensive to kccp up. lt costs so much to keep the plant dgoing that they iislierincn could not allord lt. I understand that the up-to- date cold storage fucilltics which they have now are possible at a small ex- ,; (To bo Continued.) 1 I Q ____ nun- . _ . . _ ‘ *I A11_VYomen Need I _ a corrective, occasionally, to right a disordered stomach, _ which is the cause of_so much sick headache, nervous- ness and_ sleepless nights.
