In the McDougall match, Corporal Craw- ford and Color-Sergeant V. Longworth, Sergeant Allan and Ewen McDougall got good prizes. “ Lieut Horn took a prize in the Affiliation Match. In the Provincial Match—eight men from each /|’revince—Ontario took dirst yrize, New Brunswick second~—-beating the Saas men by one point, only. At the presentation of prizes the Islaud team was pronounced by far the best equip- ped team on the grounds—their handsome uniform being much admired. The whole team took individual prizes. Winnrpea, Sept. 11. Capt. Scott (L. C.), as far as heard from, has a majority of 125 over D. A. Smith. Remaining polls may probably reduce this, but will not inaterially affect the result. A St. Augustine letter says that Mr. Owen states that several thousand dollars, besides very valuable papers in his trunk, which was among the “nuinber that reached the shore was plundered. Steps will be taken to recover the money. Trunks that contained money and valuable jewelry were destroyed by fire after being plundered, The custom house officers are trying to bring the plunderers of baggage and cargo to an account, FREDERICKSBURG, Sept. 10. Tom Warren. a freighter, on Wednesday was found murdered twelve miles north of here. The deed was committed with an axe. SAN FRANCIS¢ 0, Sept. 10 Palace Hotel and Great Court and galleries which were beautifully decorated and illu- minated with gas and electric lights, were threnged with people awaiting the appear- ance of President Hayes. About half-past nine the President appeared and was re- ceived with great eathusiasm. In a few words he thanked the audience for their kind reception, excusing himself frem making a speech on account of fatigue. Gen- eral Sherman then entertained the_ crowd for afew moments with some of his dry humor and introduced to the people Mrs. Hayes who bowed her acknowledgments and the crowd dispersed. Boston, Sept. 10. Private despatches from St. Johns, Nfld, states that the Anchor Line steamer Anglia which sailed from here on Sept. 2nd collided with the British bark lIrongate from Ant- werp for New York, on the 6th and sank. The crew were saved. The Anglia had a miscellaneous cargo and 338 live cattle. The whole cargo was valued at $112,516. Provincial Synod.., A despatch to the Halifax Chronicle of the 10th inst., says :— ‘‘The report on Foreign Missions was presented by Rev. W. L. Osler, Chairman of Committee. It strongly recommended inissions to the heathen. The Rev Dr. Bell, a delegate from the {rish Church, was invited to the platform and asked to speak. He addressed the Synod at some length, recounting the his: tory of that ehurch, past and present, affirming that from first to last he opposed the revision of the Prayer Book. A vote of thanks was tenderd the Doctor for his address. The notice of motion with reference to voting by diocese was withdrawn. The motion of Mr. Silver, with refer- ence to the rights and duties of Bishops, Rectors and Chu zhwardens was also with- drawn. The interesting event of this session was 5 . now witnessed. The presentation of the workmanship, costing three hundred dol- lars, was an unusual event.
