The Figaro on Monday devoted a column to the poet's relations with the fair sex, and said that though be was always exquisitely polite to women he occasionally bored them with his set speeches, One day a jcalous wife of a famous painter had been taxivg him with infidelity. Victor Hugo went to the mantle-piece and took arose and a piok out of a vase, and turning to theiady said:—“My dear, Tadmirethe beauty of this splendid rose, but may I not take pleasure in a pink?’ Had he stopped here it would not have mattered, but instead of that he glided into a regular dissertation on the comparative charms of the floral creation. The lady, it seems, sever showed her jealousy again, fearing that she would have to listen io another lee ture, The Cashmere Earthquake. An official despateh from Seringaur gives the number of killed and wound- ed by the earthquake there on Sunday and Monday last as follows: Killed 87, wounded 100. Official reports have not been received yet from the other points in the vale of Cashmere affected by the earthquake shock and until these come to hand the full extent of the calamity cannot be known. The reports, how- ever, are of such an alarming charac- ter as to make it more than likely that the earthquake will prove even more disasterous in its effects than the first despatches stated them to be. Whole cities and towns in ‘The Vale’ are spoken of as destroyed and the absence of defi- nte news is attributed io the demolition of telegraph lines. Advice to a Young Woman. My daughter, when you note that the man who wants to marry you is just too awfully anxious to learn whether you cao bake a loat of bread or wash a shirt with Chinese dexterity, before you close the negotiations, do you just fly around and ascertain if that man is either willing or able to earn enough tour to make a biscuit, and if he has paid for the shirt he wants you to wash. Nine times out of ten, daughter, the man who only wants wants to marry a housekeeper can be kept more econo- mically in the work-house than he can in your father’s house,— Burdette. dips Depression in Agricultvre. The prices realised at the sale of Sir Henry Allsopps Shorthorns serve to illustrate the general depression of agriculture in Mngland. The total of the sale was 9,166 guineas, which re- presented a very heavy loss on the original outlay. One cow, for instance, for which Sir Henry paid 3,200 guineas, only fetched 430, and the high- est price of the day was 660 guineas. -—_- ‘My hair is eighteen years older than inmy whiskers,” said a lawyer, “and | cannot understand why my whiskers should turn gray first.” “Because you have worked so much more with your jat Weeks & Co’s., Market Syuare and Queen | Street.
