SOME young men settle for just a job ~ without looking ahead to see if it’s leading them anywhere. YOU dding that? WHEN you’ve got th! facts, you’ll likely decide you can look ahead in the Navy. QUEEN CHARLOTTE Charlottetown Stopped Six Months After By DONALD BOLLES LEVITTOWN, Pa. (AP) ~- A rock was lobbed from the crowd standing around the pink ranch- style home. Glass shattered. More s t 0 it e s followed. The crowd of 500 jeered and shouted. For nine days and night the ruckus continued -— all over what white residents thought was the first Negro family in Levittown. This was six months ago. What is the community like today? Violence has stopped. Harass- ment is banned by a court order. A 24-hour police guard was re- moved in early November. But there is still a strong on- dercurrent of feeling about the incident. William Myers, 34, Negro war veteran who moved in with his wife Daisy and their three young children, says: “I don’t tlhlllk it’s worth what we had to go through, but I'm satisfied. Some people h ave changed their ideas. Many are sorry they were among the trou- blemakers. A few people ride by the house now and point, but it docsift bother me.” AMAZED AT HOSTILITY Myers said one of the reasons he was amazed at the extent of the hostility was that Levittown was an integrated community be- fore he ‘moved in. He insists there were Negroes passing for whites before he came. In addition, there ‘are dark - skinned Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Indians in the 60,000 population. A case in point is the Hen-ik Lake band of Eskimos whose so- cial and economic depression has led to killing and evacuation. The band at I-Ienik Lake, 250 miles northwest of Eskimo Point on the western shore of Hudson Bay, was without leadership and depressed. Then the caribou, their source of food, clothing and fuel, failed to turn up. VIOLENCE ERUPTS Violence suddenly erupted. The Eskimo recognized as the con- jurer-—or witch doc«tor—~was mur- dered and the slayer himself was stabbed to death. The 40-odd members of the band were flown to Eskimo Point by the RCMP so they could be kept under su- pervision. N-ortiliern a f f a i r s authorities have visited the band. Members worried that property V 51.1 ue s would drop, and that the Myers were backed by outside groups as an entering wedge for a. flood of Negroes. ‘ A local real estate man says property values have not drop- ped and there was no panic sell- ing. He says it’s relatively easy to sell or rent a house in Dog- wood section where Myers lives. After the August incidents, the Philadelphia Tribune, a. Negro paper, ran a list of ‘800 homes in Levittown into which a Negro could move without red tape. It got only two responses, but no sales. Myers says his reason for mov- ing in was economic. “Tthere are -a lot of things wc’vie gained here. We have a. good property, :1 ga- trage that we didn’t have, and we have both white and Negro friends.” PERSONALS Mr. Benedict Lan-igan of Cam- bridge, has received the sad news of the death of his brother, William, of Sydney, N.
