It is not generally known that Mil-
ton, the author of "Paradise Lost,"
one of the most stately and majestic
poets in the English language, once
wrote u. punning epitaph on the car-
rier who -plied between Cambridge and
London and "who lckened in the
time ol his vacancy being forbid to
go to London by reason of the
plague,” to quote the poet/s own
words. This carrier was none other
than that Hobson whose “choi0e",has
become so famous( It appears that
he used to let out his horses on hire,
but no matter how pressing; the need
a traveller had to take the horses
Hobson offered ornone, so that to-
day the phrase "H0bson's choice" is
uccd to signify no choice at ell.
Milton's poem written on the death
of this garrier is too long to quote in
full, but one ,or two passages will

A rolled hem is not hard to make,
but it does require a little knack
which only practice can give, says
the Minneapolis Journal. The hem
should be started at the right hand
end and rolled toward the goods. The
knot of the thread is hidden in the
roll which is whipped with the ordi-
nary whipping stitch ‘or overcasting
as it 'ls often called. After the work
is commenced, the rolling is done
with the thumb and the first finger of
the left hand, rolling ahead of the
whipping which is done with the
right hand.
The rolled hem was formerly :used
extensively and seems to have come
again, as it is now used to hem chif-
fons and fine materials. Its use as a
means for applying lace has, however
always been appreciated. Handker-
