NEWS & FEATURES S.U. hiring policies questioned King sparks controversy over eligibility for S.U. positions UPEI Student Union President, Todd King recently come under question. The policy deals with eligibility for student union positions, and states that ‘‘Only students who will be full time during the anticipated period of employment are eligible. Hiring of part time students shall only occur when no qualified full time students can be found to fill the position.”’ People appear to be worried that full time A Student Union hiring board policy has students aren’t getting a fair chance at jobs. - Student Union president Todd King says ‘‘I feel that full time students have the right, if they so wish, to reserve Student Union jobs for fee- paying students.’’ This may prompt protests, but seems reasonable since the $243,800 raised by these fees makes up 68% of the Student Union budget, and it is full time students who pay the fees. Many students believe that whoever is quali- | fied should be eligible for S.U. jobs; as one student stated, ‘‘students are all the same, [we] all need money.’’ Some people think part time students should be eligible because, in the words of one student, ‘‘(the policy) isn’t fair, part timers are usually supporting families and need jobs.’’ The majority of students asked agree with the hiring policy. As one student observed, “‘full time students find it harder to schedule an off-campus job, it’s easier for part time stu- dents.’’ The overwhelming opinion was that part time students should have to pay Student Union fees to be eligible for the Student Union jobs. King stresses that ‘‘these are hiring policies, not firing policies’’, and promised that enforce- ment of the policy would not result in the firing of previously hired students.
