A‘Returnod Arisan Travailer Tells ofa Pesuliac Laks | | Liverpoo., March 2.—Mr. P, P. Me- Cano, who has bad nineteen years actual resideu n West Africa, of which two years were passed in Sierra Leone, French Gaboon anid #ix in the seven 1D Niger territory, has returned from a photograpbic expedition in the Gold Cuoas', Hinterland, extending over four yeare. Mr. McCann penetrated a country which hod hitherto never been visited by a white man. He gives a descriptionof a most remarkable lake, which, although only thirty five milee from Coomassie, has only been visited by one or two white men. It is called Bosomsbi, meaning “God water,” andis held sacred by the Ashanteegs. “When my guide told me of the wonders ofthis lake,” said Mr. McCann,“ I re- eolved to visit it and get some pictures. In this ] was very successful. It is twelve miles in diamee-, but its depth ne one knows. The Asbantee King every year drowned 100 of hie slaves in the lake asa sacrifice to the water god, The bodies were never cast up again, and I think they must have beeu eaten by fish. In the breeding season shoals of dead fish are thrown up and collected by the natives. No canoe is allowed on it, and the Ashan-~ tees keep it sacred from avy kin¢i of pol- lution, There are logs or poles on it, and the natives get astride these and paddle with their bands. J believe Iam the only white man who ever wenton the Jake but itn if Mv inquiries about the lake led me to coucluce that is really a voleanic crater, and as such woul be the largest known, Ramtlings of earthquakes were still often beard, and this the natives hel-eved that it waa the god of water giving expression to his anger. The crater must have been thousands of feet deep, and the tropical rains of years had filled it. The natives use the water for drinking and other purposes, but no washing or any kind of pollution is per mitted in the Lake iteelf. In micsdsy the eun ia eo bot hat the greatest envaporatior takes place. In fact, there is a thick mist on the Lake all day, so that you can eee but a short distance over the water. A big chief offered ir. McCann the smoked thigb of a native. This was considered a gracious act, and to refuse it woull be un- frenodly. Mr McCann was thas ia a dilemma, but he teigned illness, and raid he was not eating just then. The chief eventually put the matter off good-natured- ly by saying he supposed “white man pre- ferred white man to eat inetead of black man.” ‘arly cost me ms Carnival at Souris. Maximo Gomez was briilisot affair and we!! attended, although the Bpaniards were not invited. The Junta patrioc:,'he organization which had charge of the enteriaiument, purpoes ly refrained from inviting Spaniards, which displeased the Cuban commander. Several epeeches were delivered by the guests, and the audience did vet respond in the manner expected, by reason of the absence of the Sp:nish element. The banquet was given in the theatre, the guests numbered 200, and 4,000 epeciators were present. The boxes were crowded with ladies be— longing to the best circies cf society, and the public generally crow led the four tiers of galleries, Gen. Wilson sat on ihe right of Gen. Gomez, and the Cuban general Betancourt was seated on his left. A picture of Geo, Washington was prn- minently displayed on the al. The sveeches began at 10 o’c'ock. Seuor Labostida, during the course of his re- marks, said the authorities at Washington would never govern the country against ite wi'l, a remark which was loudly cheer ed. The house also cheered President McKinley. Senor Riviera referred glowing!y to Washington, and was loudly cheered Senor Sulio Oritz, president of the Junta welcomed Gen. Gomez to Matanzas. The Cuban Commander anewered, thanked his hosts and referred feelingly tothe dark days of the revolution. --—— et atonement beeen — Tke well known poem, { “Curfew Shall Not Ring To- night:*" -to@ which a young wo- man by hanging to the curfew bell saves the life of her lover condemn- ed to be executed at the tinging of the curfew, is only one of a thousand _ strik- ing instances of how a woman , will dare everything fer love. Women are readier to make heroic sacrifices than they are to take the commonplace, everyday precautions which insure their great- « est happiness. Most wo- men are careless about their health. They for- get that ee weak- ness and disease will wreck the fairest chance in life and shut them out completely from kappy womanhood and wifehood. Weak, bilious, dyspeptic women are olbecyof their natural attractiveness and capacity. They lose healthy color and energy and ambition. The blood becomes poor and thin and ladea with disease-germs. The true antidote for this condition is Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. It acts directly upon the digestive powers and the liver, creating purc, red, healthy blood free from bilious impurities; it renovates every organ and tissue of the body, building up hard, elastic flesh and muscular strength and imparting nerve power and permanent vitality, which malt extracts do not give. Mrs. Ella Howell, of Derby, Perry Co., Ind., writes: ‘‘In the year of 1894 I was taken with stomach trouble—nervous dyspepsia. There was a coldness in my stomach, and a weight which seemed like a rock. Everything that I ate gave me great pain; I had a bearing down sensation; was swelled across my stomach; had a ridge around my right side, and in a short time I was bloated. I was treated by three of our best phy- sicians but got no relief. I was so w I could not walk across the room without assistance. Then Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery was recommended to me and I got it, and commenced the use of it. I began to improve very fast after the use of a few bottles. The physicians said my disease was leading into pulmonary consump- tion, and gave me upto die. I thank God that my cure is pe:manent.” Telephone Compaiy, The Annuel Meeti'g of “The Tel- ephone Oompany of Prince Edward Is land,” for the election of directors and for such other proceedings and business a¢ i: is competent for the shareho'de-s to deal with and determine, will b- heid on Wed- nesdsy, the 8th day of March, 1899, at the nour of 8 o’clock, p, m., at the ofBce of the Company, Queen Sr. H.J.
