The garage carries a full line of automobile ac- cessorics. In the (all of 1867 several square Pissed vessels carrying cargoes of oats to lmgiand. mostly for the Brit- ish market, were ice bound in the harbour at Surnmerside until the, following spring. owing to a. still- north west wind blowing up bringing with it heavy frost and cold. These ships were mostly built in Summer- side dock yards andhad lust been newly launched. Among the owners were the late Hon. Angus McMillan. John Lefurxcy and James C. Pope. all large ship owners of that day. In those days the principal cargo was oats. On Mely 22, 1881, the steamer Bea- trice, one of the paddle boats which plied between Sunnnersicle and the mainland, was blocked in the har- bour for three weeks owing to heavy ice in the Straits. Every day the ship would go outside the lighthouse only to rstum and report ice still in the Strait. Mr. Lorne mrkins of Sumrnelside has an interesting pic- ture of this boat as she is returning to the wharf on one of these occa- sions. About fifty years ago the “Northern Light," the first ice-boat. and what might be called a. very primitive one, which plied between Georgetown and Pictou, was caught in the ice in. the Strait for three weeks and was obliged to help out. the fuel supply by burning the ships cushions and other parts of the ship's furniture. This same ice break» l er came to the rescue of some schooners that were ice bound in Sumrnersido harbour on May 17th, a few winters later. About thirty years ago the steamship “Minto" travelled up and down the Strait caught in the ice fioes for over two weeks. It looks as if it will be May before the ice leaves the Strait this year. The heavy south west wind on Monday brought the ice back into Summer- sidla harbour giving it a very win- tery appearance. Perhaps so much ioe still remaining in the Straits is the cause of so little herring being caught.
