The Summerslde fall convention of teachers of Prince County was held vesterday in the High School auditorium with a record atten- dance of 100 teachers. It was the largest attendance of any conven- tion this yea: on the Island. Miss Estelle Bowncss, on the teaching staff of summerside High School was elected president for the coming year. Other officers include: Vice president, Wendell Mayne, Freetown; Secretary, Alma Campbell, Mai-gate. The convention was very cap- ably presided over by Mr. Heath MacQuarrie, Victoria, who was coiled to act as president owing to the absence of the executive. Mrs. Harold McIvor, Kensington was appointed secretary of the meeting. Committees appointed were: Nominating, Gwen Mac- Lean, Mamie Mill, Davis Lidstone; Resolutions: Theo Ling, Muriel Enzland. Wendell Mayne; Ques- tion Bcx: Mamie Conrad. Dolly Matthew; Press: Dorothy MacFar. lane, Elizabeth MacKay. The meetings were very inter- esting and many instructive dis- cussions took place. Mr. Malcolm MztcKenzie, supervisor gave a short address in which he explain- eu the course of studies and point- ed out some wettltrsses a5 well .15 some good points he had observed in the classrooms. Miss Jacqueline Macdonald, sec- retary treasurer of the P. E. I. T. F. gave a short talk and urged all members to join the Federation. Miss Verna Darracii. director of Junior Red Cross work reviewed the work accomplished by the pu. pils. she congratuated them on their splendid contribution to the war effort, the juniors had con- tributed $2,375.00 during the year, an increase of eight hundred dol- lars over last year. This included the crippled children fund and tviir fund. The junixs of P. E. I have sent a mobile kitchen to Eng- land. Miss Drtrrach demonstrated a parcel for prisoners of at‘. She vrs-"d the pupils to mak! more iifghans and quilts. The senior department of Vic- toria Schooi, Mr. Heath Mac. Quarrie teacher, won the banner awarded by the Red Cross each year. An interesting discussion took place on some of the chief aims in teaching, points brought out were to teach pupils self ex. pression. to become good citizens, ifogllfellare them for complete liv- n . Another discussion was that of the larger unit of administration. These were capably dealt with by the super- visor, with the help of teachers present. A pleasing feature of the con- vention was a sing song, with Miss DE GU RONICLE ‘Catherine MacCaliurn at the piano. A resolution asking that the Board of Education pay those teachers under eighteen years who have bean allowed to take schools brought out some interesting com. merits. It was felt by many that if any teacher was considered old enough to teach they should be considered old enough to receive their proper pay. The chairmen gave an instance where he knew that owing to the shortage of teachers a. man of 75 was teaching and receiving his pay, but a bril- liant pupil who was a few months short of eighteen was allowed to teach but are not paid by the De- pariment. Reaolutionl 1. Bo it resolved that all teach- ers attending this convention pledge their loyalty to their King and country. 2. Whereas a larger number of ratepayers are uninformed con- cerning the larger school unit be it resolved that the Island teach- ers Federations use some media for enlightening the people on this subject. 3. whereas it has come to our notice that certain teachers under eighteen years of age have been given permission by the depart. ment to sign teaching contracts and whereas the teachers do not receive payment from the depart- uiciit this convention resolves that‘ the teachers be paid by the dc- parimciit or else not be permitted t0 teach. 4. Be it resolved that teachers be piiid according to their class of I license regardless of the number- of pupils enrolled in the school. 5. Resolved that. married tench- trs whose licenses have expired because of inactivity from teach- ing be paid according to their or- iginztl class of license. 6. It is hereby resolved that this convention extends its thanks to the Summcrside High School Lcard for the use of its auditorium and that it aiso extends its thanks to all others who have helped iii making this meeting a success.
