Mr Bracken, in comment- ing on the Western Premiers con- ference here today with Prime Min- ister R.. B. Bennett, disclosed that assurance had been given by Mr. Bennett that the provinces would be called upon to pay only five ner oent of the old age pensions charges as comrpared with the 50 per cent now contributed. Mr Bennett in his election speeches had promised relief for the provinces in the cost of old age pensions, and Mr Bracken in his comment today said: "With regard to old age pensions, the Prime Min- ister amplified his previous state- ment and made lt clear that the Dominion would pay 95 per cent of the cost." Legislation, it. is indloa/ted, pnovld- ing for the larger payment by the ‘Federal Government, will be intro- ,duced at the forthcoming session of Parliament. In commenting on the conference, Premier Bracken said: "With respect to the agricult- ural situation, Mr. Bennett thor- oughly understands the seriousness Of the difficulties facing the West. I should much prefer that any fur- ther statement concernlng the Do- minion policies relating to this ques- tion' should come from Mr. Bennett himself. Mr Bracken said the natur~i al resources discussion with Mr. Bennett was quite satisfactory io all, resulting in clearing up many min- or difficulties, and he also r'evea.led| that the Prime Minister had request- ed the provinces to be represented at the Dominion Conference, in Ot- tawa. for a discussion of questions raised at the Imperial Conference. FULFILLING A PLEDGE HALIFAX, N. S., Jan. ’1--"The people of Nova Scotia will enjoy old age pensions during the present year if Premier Bracken is quoted correct- ly, and I sincerely hope that he is," raid Premier Gordon S. Harrington tonight, commenting on the assur- ance the Manitoba. Premier said had been given by Rt. Hon. R. B. Ben- nett. that the Federal Government would pay 95 percent of the cost of old age pensions. "Legislation will be prepared immediat-_:ly and introduc- ed at the coming session of thc House of Assembly so that the aged needy in this province will be provid- ed for before the year has passed,” he continued. Premier Harrington .said such a national pensions sys- tem would wipe out inequalities of th~ present scheme under which the cost is equally divided between prov- inces and the Dominion, Owing to the unequal proportion of aged in the different. provinces. he said, Nova Scotia. had been unable so far to adopt pension legislation and provide for it out of provincial revenue. “In making such n change Prime Minis- ter Bennett would be fulfilling s pledge which he made prior to ns- suming office." he added. 1 N.
