GLACE BAY, N. 5.. (CP) - Goalie Al Mlllar held off a. last- period rush Saturday as Charlotte- town Islanders edged Glace Bay Miners 3-2 to knot their Maritime Major Hockey League best-of-nine semi-final at two games each. Mil1ar's play was the big factor in the Charlottetown victory as the Miners swarmed all over the Is- landers end during the last 16 min- utes. Erwin Grosse, left winger on the line with Hub Beaudry and Bob Gray, fired the game-winning goal at 1:36 of the final period. Buck' Whitlock and Gray scored the oth- er goals for the Islanders. For the Miners. Bill Mccraoken Ihot both tallies in the third per- iod. TUESDAY James Robert Alnsworth, son oi Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Ainsworth, Mount Edward Road. who has been chosen by the Rotary Club of Charlottetown to attend the project of the Rotary Club of Ot- tawa. "An Adventure in Citizen- ship". which takes place in that city May 4-7 inclusive. He is a graduate of West Kent School and is presently a student at King's Collegiate School, Windsor. Brigadier W. W. Reid elected President of the Char- lottr-town Rotary Club at their weekly luncheon meeting held at the Charlottetown Hotel yester- day preslded over by Mr. Allister MacLeod. Others elected to comprise the Directorate were Past President Gordon Avard, Vlcs President, Dr. Harold Shaw, Secretary, R. C. Parent, Treasurer, W. R. Crulck- shank, and Director: Frederic A. I Large, Q.C., Waller Hyndman and Frank Maclfcnzie. VVRS De-fenceman George McLagan ripped a 40-foot screened shot into , the Glace Bay net after is min- ; utes and 73 seconds of overtime ' play last night to give the power- ful qharlottetown Islanders a 3-2 win over the Glace Bay Minus and a 3-2 lead in games in their M.MtH.L. semi-nnal series. The Miners were playing a man short with Bill Burega in the pen- alty box when McLsgan fired the winner. Burega was sitting out his rt of a minor and major penal- tiea for fighting with Gus Gustav- eaon and roughing with Marcel Clements. A homers nest was stirred up in the Legislature yesterday when an dlltbnt to the ChI.rlotte- mom, 1n tlon Act came up which would have -permitted the to raise the anessment rate from 8500 to . alum-so third but Hf. I. 6' on- Qusaos,-' its object made a 3NftIIiI tau it be referred back to a committee of the whole House. This was done and the bill received a. thorough going over from a large number of members. A previous clause in the bill would force employers to collect poll tax from their employees anl several of the sitting members took exception to it. However, on a called division only Hon. Eugene Cullen, Hon, Keir Clark and Mr. William Hughes voted against the section. Flatly denying that he was an enemy of labor, Dr. W. J. P. Mac- 'M.illan yesterday took sharp issue with a letter appearing in The Guardian last week from a. repre- senative of the Laborers Protective Union. Dr. MacMillan rose in the Legis- lature on a question of personal privilege and said he regretted that apparently he had not made him- self plain enough in his remarks about unions last week. The speak- er said he could offer a whole life. time of work to offset the charge. "If I gave that impression it was done unconsciously as I am an enemy of no one.” Dr. MacMillan said to a burst of applause from both sides of the House. VVEDNESDAY Clear water is showing in many areas of! the coast of this Prov- ince according to reports last night from the Ice Patml. Captain C. A. Shaw, observer, said however that with southerly winds blowing much of the open water could be closed by ice drfts. In the plane crew with Capt. Shaw yesterday were Capt. Frank Henly, pilot; William Bruce, first officer; E. P. Watson, navigator; Howard Maclnnis, engineer. OTTAWA, ICP)--Transport Minister Chevrier said Tues- day he has made a suggestion to the Prince Edward Island Government for an arrange- ment concerning use of the Hlilaborougli bridge near Charlottetown. Mr. Chevrier, speaking to the Commons railway commit- tee, gave no details of his proposal. The bridge, formerly used by the Canadian National Railways. was condemned a few years ago by the board of transport commissioners for railway use. Since then, the federal and P. E. I. governments have been in discussions as to its status. During discussion in committee of the Legislature of the Civil ser- vice Act Major John A. MacDon- ald, Third Kings, proposed an amendment which would coincide with the clause in the FederalSer- vice Act guaranteeing the veter- ans' preference. Hon. A. W. Matlieson, promoter of the bill, said the proposed Act was not costly to the Province as the public servants had contribut- ed to a retirement fund. He said the veterans' preference clause was not in the Act but that the Gov- ernment tried to give a preference although it was true that it was not always done. Approximately one hundred mem- bers of the P. E. I. Federation of Agriculture and others interested in the report of the Custom Kill- ing Plant committee heard the whole matter discussed in detail at a meeting in the Clover Club last night. presided ox or by Mr. Roland MacDonald, the Federation presi- dent. A resolution that "the matter be left in the hands of the commit- tee to oontinue work under the supervision of the board of direct- ors", brought the session to a close at midnight. The report, which was submitted and moved for adoption by the chairman of the committee, Mr. Andrew Stevenson, and seconded Mr. Louis MacDonald, brought to light many details as to cost of construction of the partly con- structed Wlieatley plant, and the sum required to complete the same should it be deemed expedient by the farmers to purchase shares at 825 per share and own and operate the same. Taking issue with a. letter ap- pearing in yesterday's Guardian, Mr. R. R. Bell, Leader of the Opposition, rose on a question of personal privilege ”also privilege that concerns other members of the House." The letter in question. signed by Alexander MoicLean, president, Div- islon No. 20 Can. Brotherhood of Railway Employees, closed with the phrase ”Let. all of us who work in industrial enterprises take note of the record of representatives at this sitting of the House." It was this to which Mr. Bell took ex- caption. He said that no labor legislation has been introduced in the House and ”l have taken no part in any discussion, nor has my Party officially. .Any member may speak as he sees fit." Mr. Bell stated he had always been a iriend of labor in Charlotte- town and Prince Edward Island and had worked hard and long on many occasions in the interest of labor. "I am merely making this objection as I cannot let go un. challenged a statement made the Press which is incorrect, possibly a mistake on the writers part." THURSDAY has been minister of Presbyterian Church in Charlotte- Ont. Presbyterian Churches, - and is expected to leave for his new charge early next week. During his long and fruitful ministry in this city, Rev. Mr. Webster has been honoured by the Prince Edward Island Presbytery in his election to the position of Moderator and also of Clerk. In the broader field of church govern- ment, he has filled the position of llodenwr of the Maritime in 01' , income," Rev. G. Carlyle Webster, who Zion town since 1931, has accepted a call from the joint congregations of Wallaoetown and West Lorne, Synod. which includes Newfound- land. He is also a Past President. of the Ministerial Association of Charlottetown. Mrs. Harold Laird. President of the P. E. Island Women's Institute occupied the chair during the morning andufternoon sessions in the District Presidents Leadership Course Programme which opened at the Vocational School yester- day morning and concludes with a morning session today. Greetings were read from Hon. C. C. Baker, Minister of Agricul- ture and Mr. W. R. Shaw, Deputy Minister, after which an outline of the course was given. . GLACE BAY? N.s.. (CP)-Play. ing coach Hub Macey slapped home, a goal at 10.55 of a third overtime period Wednesday to give Glace Bay Miners a 4-3 win over Charlottetown Islanders in their Maritime Major Hockey League semi-finals. The win knotted the best-of-nine series at tnree. games each. The seventh game will be in Charlotte- town Friday and the winners of the series will meet Halifax Atlan- tics for the league ilplle. For the Miners, playing without (hC'SEl'l'lC85.0I Gordie Miller and Eddie .1055, it was an uphill battle all the way. "We have safety in the persons and character of those who will rule us in the future,” Premier J. Walter Jones said in the Legisla- ture as he drew the attention of Members of the House to the strong position of" the Throne in Great Britain du.ring his personal tribute to the late Dowager Queen Mary. The Premier gbriefly traced the Royal family history through the past century and reminded the I-emslature that breeding paid an important part in the production of our monarchs as he said that there was more than environment involved in shaping a ruler of the-. coun-try. Mr. R. E. Bell, as leader of Her MEJEDWS L0)'IIl Opposition, also paid high tribute to the late Queen as he called her the ”guiding hand "Om day to day." He said that Derhaps there were many who did not realize the full extent of the influence she wielded through the advice and help she always gave, FRIDAY The names were announced yes- terday of five members who will represent Prince Edward Island Womenls Institutes at the Ascot ated Country Women of the World Conference wliioh opens August 12th at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
