A. PICKARII & 0o. Ltd. t BRUNNER MOND ,. H‘ Nil}, ‘is. It". 1m following recommendation tor a site for the proposed Oity bus terminal has been submitted to the City Council by the City Planning Board: "lllollowing receipt at a petition from rnumber od citizens. the Public Property Committee of the Council have asked your Board to ninvestigate the possibilitiesoi hous- ing a bus tenrninal within the Mer- ket building. Your Board have gone into the matter as exhaust- ively as possible for a volunteer Board, have secured information from many angles, and have tried to consider the pros and cons o! the site. _ "It is agreed: "s. That bus service is necessary and desirable, and that facilities should be as convenient and mod- ‘em as it is possible to provide within the means available. "h. 1t is obviously in the City's interest to ensure that a comfort- able and sanitary terminal is ‘pro~ vided for our rural and iouristvls- ltors. “c. ‘That the site oi the terminal should be as central as possible. without unduly interfering with existing and future traflic. "d. That it is desirable that all six bus services use one terminal, yii.’ possible, to facilitate dispatch and control of traflic. “e. _That it is desirable 1n any event to have a. civic comfort stat- ion in the central area oi’ the city for the convenience oi visitors and shoppers, with parcel check room iaollities, and where transportation mdormation is readily available. Available Sites "Your Board is not aware ed a sits in or near the centre o! the city containing the necessary area which could be obtained without a considerable outlay 0d money (or land and construction o! a bulld- ingl-rwhich it would appear neither the Gity nor the bus companies are prepared to make. “The Market building has avail- able in the baseman‘, now vacant, an areagquite suflicient to provide waiting space, comdort faculties. oflice and check room, at no great coated conversion. Location o! this area is in the east and south-east section o! the basement, to which there are presently two entrances. one on the east and another on the south side. ‘The possibility cl using the north side od the Market building was thoroughly investigated. Due toaslopeonthestreet ands!- ioot diflererwe in levels inside the birilding. and for other reasons, this alternative proved mvwurk- able. Undeairable Factors “Against the proposal will be the loss cl approximately 15 parking spaces for automobiles, entailed by neoeudlrily markim ofl as reserved space (or parking 6 buses. A strip 40' wide would be required, ‘the width of ‘the building. and right against its south side. This loss will -be somew” t oflset by on in- crease in the available parking space on the north dde o! the Market building, due to the dis- continuance oi buses parking there. "mere the possibility that some o! the architectural features o! the south side ct the Market building might be obscured by a proposal canopy, unless erection o! this is carefully engineered while some police traflic supervis- ion would no doubt be necessary nvhile the public were becoming accustomed to the use o! the new terminal. Recommendation "The factors in favor ad the proposal have in the opinion o! your Board considerably outweigh- ed the disadvantages. and your Board therefore recommend that the Council seriously consider this site as more suitable for a bus teruninal than any other site so far proposed. "It is suggested: "a. That the 01w should finance suitable renovation or the vacant basement section oi‘ the Market building for the purpose desired, erecting also a canopy along the south side oi the Market building for protection c! bus passengers entering and alightlng from buses curing bad weather. "b. That the premises could then h leased to the’ larger bus comp- any. provided some will be respon- sible tor rmintensnce oi the prem- ises, check room, and dispatch of vehicles, in return for a sub-rental to be received from the iive ad- ditional bus services using the facilities or the proposed terminal. rm: cuanmalv. CH '_I‘_OWN Planning Board Discusses City Bus Terminal Site It is understood that me bus companies are prepared to keep the premises open h-om 7 in the morning to 12 at night. under the direction o! regular attendants o! the bus company. The night light- ing c! this aide of the square will be a desirable factor. “c. That the major bus company be asked to pay a rental to the Onty, under a long term lease. sui- flcient to amortize the cost od re- novation and conversion, rent and taxes. "d. That careful traffic routes and regulations for this area be drawn and rigidly maintained for the protection oi lids and ‘property, with whatever street markings arc necessary. “e. That. i! considered advisable. a trial be mad-e oi’ the location (or say one week, during which neces- sary trafllc control regulaticgs could be tested, and the practical ieasability of the project tried be- fore funds were spent in renovat- ion od the basement section of the Market building." ‘rown Planning Board.
