The next day they started with guides for the foot of the voleano, over the lava-seamed country. The guides were frequently alarmed by subterreanean rumblings, and as they neared the mountain, its sum- mit was ,observed to be shrouded with a hood of greyish smoke. When they arrived at the point whence the cone proper rises, the two adventurous men left the guides behind and proceeded to search for @ practicable route of assent. They were visible to the guides for more then an hour. At last they reached a ledge of rock where appsrently an insurmountable obstacle offered itself, as they were seen to halt and consult together. Clouds of cinders shot up from the crater, and when last seen the adventurers were grasping each other by the hands. Following close on the cloud of cinders occurr- ed a terrific explosion, and a huge volume of molten lava rose like a fountain against the sky, ia which, as it descended in streams down the side of the cone, the foolhardy couple were engulfed. eee Mortgage Sale.
