The spirit of the campaign has taken hold of the people and old and I young, rich and poor, all classes and all creeds assembled in the hall and gave rapt attention. Across the front end of the hall were the words. “For God and iirii’s%%%% O -hodd llmnteed solid leather just What is wanted by Parents Wd Children for Fall Foot- Fathers and Vlothers $01 your family supply o B00f»S. TF BRIIS Home and Native Land ;” on one side, levi-.te for Prohibition,” and on the other side, “Save the Boys.” Previous to the chair being taken the German band gave several excellent selections. Dr. Taylor presided and proved an ` ideal chairman. In his opening re- marks he made the striking assertion that if we had prohibition the chronic diseases of men would be reduced one third in tt-n years. The liquor men have distributed a lnumber of cards giving reasons why electors should not vote for prohibitir n And last evening each speaker replied t to one of these reasons. demolishing from it every fragment of argument. Hon. David Laird replied to the per- isonal liberty chestnut. He dealt blow ,after blow. showing that on every hand ‘personal liberty is interfered with for _the social good and such interference will continue to the end of time. Mr. J. K. Ross replied to the revenue on the blackboard he quoted from the bition. titiiiiiiylti in argument, and by a tabulated statement Royal Commission report, showing that instead of Canada losing nine millions , revenue in the event of prohibition, we ft now lose one hundred and thirty four mil ions annually for the want of prohi- and refuted with rare eloquence the as- sertion that prohibition wi-l throw peo- ple out of employment. \Vith keen sar- casni he pointed out that no sane man would vote for the perpetuation of war to give employment,or wish for the con- tinuation of a plague that doctors or undertakers might find work. Mr. J. E. B. .ttlctlresdy spoke upon the statement m de by the liquor men, that prohibition laws are a failure. He quoted figures from reliable sources showing that in Maine the law is highly Successful and the people rapidly in- creasing the r wealth. Rev. Geo. F. Dawson in a few words exploded thc rum theory th.t an army of oflicials w ll be required to enforce the law and did so by quoting their previous argument that the prohibition wou’d throw many men out of em- ployment. Rev. A. F. Browne asserted that no business gives such large protlts for Ihe ,money invested or requires so little brains to run it as the liquor business. If Charlottetown votes right he would guarantee that P. E. Island will give such a majority as will paralyze the liquor interests. These printed argu- ments of the rumsellers are not genuine. Their arguments will be the buying of votes. But' the man who sells his vote is not worthy to live under the British flag. Rev. C.W.Corey‘s all otment was to refute the assertion that prohibition would create ill feeling. He did to most eff-ctively, happily remarking that the mt-st ill feeling would be, oc- casioned in the stomachs of those prone to take their drink. Mr. W. H. B. ntley spoke of the rum- sellers’ plea thattprohibition is class leg- islation and showed that all laws are class legislation restricting private rights for public weal. Mr. A. B. McKe-izie was one of 3000 delegates who met in Ottawa ive years ago to formulate a Liberal platform. The plebiscite as one of the planks was adopted without a dissenting vote. If a . _good majority of the total Pvt;-TB' "be polled' 'he had 'no ooubt a prohibitory law would be enacted with- in a ieasonable tune, It would effect business not advers» ly is the liquor dealers oiaimed. but would result in turning $40,000,000 more money into the channels of legitimate trade.
