WESLEY AND WELLINGTON. his very remarkable, that the family of Wesley has given to Great Britain two of the most emi- nent men of modern times,—tbe Greatest Captain of the age and the greatest A tle of‘ Inven- gelical truth, perhaps. since the eforniation. The family of Wesley or Welleeley as it is now called, was very ancient in the County of Meath and had summons to Parliament among the Baro- nial houses of Ireland as early as the year I389 The representative of the family at ecornmenee- meat‘ of the last century was Garret Wesley. Esq., of Dungan who married a daughter of Dudley Colly of Castle Carberry and was suc- ceeded on his Estates by his only son Garret Wes- ley.—'I‘his person died childless and by his will, dated 1727, gave all his estates to his cousin Richard Golly, his mother’s nqpliew, on condition of hi. urriiiig the name of eeley.—Thia Mr. Colly opley having obtained the property of Dungan, in addition to his own paternal Estate, became a large landed proprietor and being a young man of talents and energy, obtained a seat in the Irish Parliament, got into Government eni- ployment,—the great road to honours in Ireland at that time. and eventually was elevated to the Peerage by the title of Baron Mornington. He was the grandfather of the great Duke of Wel- lington. The Dulre’s Elder brother, the late Lord Mornington about the year l803.ftndiug that in the ancient records of the family, the name was spelt Wellesley. and that Wesley was merely ati abre- vintion, though it had been used by the family for nearly 200 years, assumed the name of \Vellesley on his being elevated to the English Peerage as Marquis of Wellesley, and the Duke himself re- tained the name of Arthur Wesley, until some time after his arrival in ‘a. In the year I723, the old gentleman Garret Wesley, of Dungan above mentioned, being child- less, wrote to his kinsman (probably a second cousin) in England, the Revd. Samuel Wesley, Rector of Epworth, father nftlie celebrated John Wesley, offering to adopt his youngest son Charles, and make him heir to his property, at this time young Charles Wesley was at Westmiuister School, and for several years the expenses of his education were defrayed by Mr. Garret Wesley, who eventually came over tp England, and after much conversation and enquiry. asked him whe- ther he would accompany him to Ireland. The youth decided on writing to his father before he would make up his mind,--the father left it to his own choice, and he preferred the prospects which the ministry afforded to the riches of this world; ii happy choice, says John Wesley in his account of his brother. The result of this choice was most remarkable, for Mr. Garret Wesley returned to Ireland, and chose his mother’s nephew young Richard Colly to succeed him, a gentleman whose worldly sagacity elevated hitn to the peerage, and laid the foundation of a family which now taken its place among the nobles of the nd. It will be seen that the Duke of Wellington claims no blood connection with the Wesleys or \Ve|les_leys. his ancestor was Mr. Colly, whose aunt, Elizabeth Colly married a Mr. Wesley. The Wesleys are an ancient noble family, the Collys were not, and the only patricisn descent the great Duke had to boast of, was through his mother. who was a Miss Hill Trevour, daughter of Lord Dungnnnon, who claims alliance through yqnior branches, with some of the great English ousee ‘ Solomon says, “ He who gains a victory over bimselfis greater than be who taketh a city.” The family of \Welles|ey have as much to boast of in the Great, John Wesley as in their adopted son, the Hero of Waterloo and Sering- apatatn. The latter through his great military talents achieved the peace of Europe and saved his country fromaforcign foe.——tlie former by the Grace of God, was the instrunfent of achieving “ that peace which paeseth all understanding” in the hearts of millions of his fellow country men, and b heroic exertions in the cause of pure Gos- pel ruth has sent his name to posterity with imperishable fame in the history of the Christian Church. Which of those two men was the greatestl they have both gone to their account. Several physicians have endorsed the efficacy of the application of fat bacon In those attacked with scarlet fever. Dr. Lindsay of Washington, enya:—M_v plan has been to have the whole body rubbed with the inside rind of fat uncooked bacon, during the whole course of the disease. and to de- pend upon the tincture of iodine, applied freely once, twice or three times in the twenty-foiir hours, to arrest the nnginous affection. But one case (and that had left the city convalescent ter- minated fatally, besides another one which saw in consultation, in which this treatment was ap- plied.” If there in virtue in this simple remedy it cannot be too generally known. It has thin recommendation; it can do no harm. We see it stated that a well has been sunk in Hocking,Vii|ley, Ohio, to the depth of six hundred feet, for the purpose of obtainin salt water. The object of the enterprising indivl uals has been fully accomplished, a supply of water lin.ving been reached, which requires but fifty-three gallons to make a bushel of salt of fifty pounds. The water risen spontaneously to the surface, at the nu of 4,000 to 6,000 gallons per day.
