FAI-`iMER'5 BIG MEETlNG.- Ou Thursdiiy evening. .liinuury 21st, Mr. l`ticlii1rd Creed attended an Agricul- tural Conference at Brookfield__whcre lie- placed before the farmers present the importance of raising greater sup- plies next year to meet the deficit which is bound to occur through so many people being taken from agri- culture t'or the war. He laid particu- lar emphasis on the value ot’ good seed and pointed out that on farms on Prince Edward island crops had been increased six husliels per acre through the use oi' seed oi the highest quality. ,lie then went on to speak of the use of fertilizers at the present tiine. He stated that as a general thing lie did not advocate the use of fertilizers but the present is it very exceptional time. The price ot' all grains is high now -and there is a reasonable certainty that they will even be higher next year. With that in view there is no doubt but that it will pay farmers to use fertilizers, it` it is used with a certain degree ol`,,intelligenco, and at the same time they will be showing patriotism in a practical manner. 1-Ie -pointed out that the elements in which ilie crops were liable to be deficient were, Nitrogen, Phosphoric Acid and Lime. Where crops were sold off year after year and where clover has not been grown ,successfully there is likely to be a greater deficit of Nitro- gen than ot' any. of the other elements. Nitrogen can- be obtained in mixed- i'er- tilizers or as a. chemical in Nitrate oi' Soda. it is however very much better for the ordinary fr--ini' to buy it ii the form of nitrate as this is a Stand- ard article and very seldom contains impurities. Further, the price ol’ Nitr- ate oi’ Soda is not likely to be increas- eil by the war. but on the other lianil will likely be cheaper. as immense quantities of tliis.'c-heniical. have been used in the past in Europe. Consider- able care must be used however in putting on Nitrate of Soda. It is read- ily soluble and if too much is put on is may wash away and be lost, or a- gain, it may hiirii up the plants. lt should bc put on grain when ii is a- bout two inchcs high and on iueadow lands, after the grass is wcll started in the Spring. it should he spread just about as thinly as possible. lf a hundred pounds could be distributed fairly evenly over an acre it might be quite sufficient for one application, and if a man planned to put onthree hundred pounds ol' Nitrate oi' Soda per acre it would be better to put it on in three applications if possible, at any rate it should not be put on all at once. The ideal time to put it on would bc iinniediately before a rain, when the grass is quite dry. If the grass is wet there is a possibility of some burning occuring but when it is put on when the grass is dry and is spread fairly thin there is very _little chance of it doing any injury. The Address was followed by a discussion which was taken part in by Capt. Mc- Dui’i’, J. li. McPherson and Charles McDufi‘ and others. after which the meeting was brought to ii close. On Tuesday evening Mr. Creed will speak at Springfield. Lot 07. and on Wednesday, January 27th at Sianchel. : :Our (‘.igiirs are tne clioicost mann- factiireil-tliey are kept in a patent huniidor :it just the right ,moisture to make them delight the particular smoker.
