ANGLICAN SYNOD, Annual Adiress by the Lord Bishop, The provinciai synod of the Church of England met in St. Luke’s cathedral, Hali fax, on Friday, when the opening sermon was preached by Rev. Dyson Hague. The first business meeting was conven d at three o’clock, the lord bishop presiding. Rev. W. J. Ancient was elected clerical secretary. The lord bishop made his annual address. Io opening he referred to the fact that contributions by religious societies in England for prosecuting the work of the Church of England in the liocese are. being rapidly reduced, aad that by the end of another three or four years they may be expected to have come ‘oan end. Upon this he urged the neces sity for taking steps 10 sapply the defici- ency created by such action by eliciting much larger contributions from the church people of the diocese, who require to be roused to meet the demands rightly made ipon them tbat they shall provide for the supp y Of their own 7 ligious necessit es, indalso help to support the missionaries t che church in Algoma the Northwest and the foreign _ficid. He then addressed himse!f to the clergy, referring to the great discrepancy existing between the returns made by them cf the numbers of the Church of Eagiand people in the two provinces and thoze in the last census, and urged them to greater dilig- ence in watching over their flock -xhorting them to increased reverence in 3 ¢ lso renderiug the services in church, and more care for what might by though sma!] and trifling detai's, but which might if unattended to have effect upoa their Gwn epiritual life ard that of their people. Then an earnest word was uttered cegarding the need of a prayerful spirit in which to fulfil the promise made at their wdination in the question: ‘Will you be dilligent in prayers?” Re- ference was made to the erence which was held at Truro in October last, and to the days of ntercession fur Sunday schools observed in the same month throughout the Angli- can communion, and the lamentable lack t male teachers in the Sunday schooler, and the clergy were urged to greater faith- fulness in their preaching so as to stir the induce them to ery out, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?” The right and suffi-ient prepar- ation of candidates for confirmation was then touched upon, and the difficulty of ;e forming their duty, where classes can- not be held, but persons must be yi-ited odividually, a knowledged. The sudden leath, after a very short illness, of the Bishop of Qu’Appelle was referred to, and the erection of the new see of Ottawa, regarding which the Bishop said he desir- i ti at the office cf metropolitan might be permanently transferred to that eee, No Jess than six clergymen have died in the two years since the synod was last in sessiou—amongst whom very special men- tion was mate of the diocesan secretary, Rev. J. O. Ruggles, and the missionary appointed to Churchover, Rev. J. W. Thomson, who died of scarlet fever within a fortnight of bis ordination, and while on the way to take up his work. After this the subject of temperance was spoken of, and reterence made to a volume of ser- mons and addresses by Canon Ellison, the some an ill respou 3e to missionary con- ensciences of men and founder and fcr thirty years chair- man of the Church of _ England Temperance Society, which is un‘qne n thas it has a dual basis <n which total abe‘ainers and those who use intoxicating drinks are banded together in the common work of promcting temper- ance, Tuten the work of the “Aberdeen asso- istior,” which gathers and. distributes literature in the country parishes, was ymmended, and the address closed with in earnest appeal to recognize the necessity a d importance of the work which the synod 1s created to perform. a EXAMINER ° PERSONAL. | We regret to hear that Rov.
