PIPING PLOVER NEST SURVEY RESULTS DISTURBING by BrucelJohnson, CWS Comparisons with the 1991 census indicate that there was a considerable drop in the Atlantic Canada Piping Plover population. A 46% decrease in P.E.I.; a 27% decrease in N.S.; and a 28% decrease in N.B. Increases of 146% in Nfld. and 26% in the Magdalens represented only 30 birds. The total population was down by 21% in Atlantic Canada in 1994 with 182 pairs and 36 single birds reported. While there were a few beaches not done at the time of compilation of the results, a few pair aren't going to alter the results. (adapted from a letter dated Aug. 10th, 1994).
