R Famous leaning Tower To Have New Diagnosis PISA, Italy, (Reuters)-Europe's most famous architectural invalid is scheduled for another diagnosis soon when Prof. Walter Kjelman of the Swedish Geotechnical In- stitute begins to probe the soil beneath the leaning tower of Pisa. Kjelman will take the controls of a special sounding apparatus he invented which has been bor- rowed by Italian scientists to study the sagging soil which has been the cause of the tower's chronic incline. He thus joins the growing com- pany of distinguished diagnostic- lans who have prescribed every- thing from steel splints to cement injections since Pi.sa'a marble landmark showed its first symp- ,of time to try new ones. The . tower is still leaning on schedule oms by giving a digmned lurch almost 300 years ago. All treatments have been un- availing. But, as Pisans observe without ooncem there's still pienty' -about a quarter of an inch more annually-and at that rate it won't collapse for another 200 years. Old Problem A problem from its very begin- ning in ll73, the lilo-foot tower began to lean even before it was completed. The first architect gave up in despair after his brainchild showed signs of bias and another builder completed the structure about 1350. Since then the tower has con- tinued its wayward ways until now a. plumb line dropped from its bel- rry top strikes the ground 11 feet from its foundations. Pisans have reason to hope that Dr. Kjeiman's cure won't be too successful. The tower draws 60.000' tourists a year up its winding steps. Mariel Prospecis (By Harold Morrison, Canadian Press sun writer) OTTAWA, (CP)-Canada": po- tato growers may find selling a little tougher next year with heavy supplies developing both in Canada and the United States. a committee of tederal experts said today. Thus, potato prices, which cur- rently have dropped from 1951 and 1952 levels, likely will con- tinue to remain low in 1954, the committee said. Continuing its report to the an- nual federal-provlncial agricul- tural conference, the committee made these forecasts: 1. With production increasing, Canada's supply of fruits. par- iirularly apples and grapes. likely will be more plentiful next year. 2. With the exception of pota- toes, the marketing outlook ap- " race seven i pears to be "relatively good" for most horticultural crops. 3. Despite a drop in bee colon- ies, an "average" honey crop may be expected in 1954, but the maple syrup crop Imay be down. a lack of rainfall resulting in an inadequate sugar supply. 4. Production 0! edible vege- table oils has reached an all-time high in Canada, but Canada still requires a lot more than she pro- duces.
