8 News _ The Cadre 1998-1999 UPEI Student Union Elections | To help promote the various candidates, The Cadre has offered each indi- vidual running for a position in the UPEISU Election the opportunity to introduce. themselves to the campus in 200 words or less. Chief Returning Officer and current VPI Pauline Tran announced this opportunity during last Wednesday’s general meet- ing. Those who have submitted their profiles appear below; all candidates’ names appear to the right. inet Laurie Boswall Candidate for SU President Hello! My name is Laurie Boswall, and I’m running for Student Union President. I decided to run because I want to see a Student Union Executive that works for stu- dents and addresses our serious concerns about rising tuition and student debt. A tuition freeze is not an impossible dream. We keep hearing that the economy is improving, but the tuition keeps rising. Students in Newfoundland and Labrador have achieved a two year freeze on tuition, and their economy is worse than ours. Putting more money towards higher education is a decision based on politics, not economics. It won’t be easy, but if we work together, Island students can also achieve this. | simply don’t believe the people who would say that we’re too apathetic to do it! I can’t promise a tuition freeze, but I will fight for one! Rising student debt must also be addressed. The government is currently con- sidering a scheme which would de-designate certain institutions and programs which have high default rates. This would make students in these institutions/programs in- eligible for government student loans. If elected, I will fight against these measures. 1 would also like to look into different ways that the ealth Centre could be expanded, perhaps by having a doctor set up a private practice in it. I welcome suggestions on these and other issues concerning students. My E-mail is Poel upel ca Finally, don’t forget to vote. Last year voter turnout was only 5%. UPEI can do better than that! Sarah Murphy Candidate for SU Vice President Internal First, | would like to see the Cadre and CIMN work more closely together. CIMN could contribute to the content (eg. programming schedules, top 20, reviews, etc.) The Cadre could submit news briefs to be aired on CIMN. I would also like to see a forum for sub-organization and society information exchange, such as a better campus section in the Cadre, announcements on CIMN, distribution lists, list-servs. Students must be made aware of the services offered by the Department of Student Services. These include scholarships and bursary information, counseling , and ee Most of all, I want better communication between the Student Union Council and the Union, of which we are all members. Students must feel well eo concerns must be addressed and they should have a sense of ownership of the nion. An important goal is to have better communication between the Union and ie ene so that they are fully aware of student concerns and act accord- ingly. " Make sure you take the time to vote. Michael Lisetto Candidate for SU Vice President External I don’t have all the answers. That’s the truth. What I do have though are the ideas. So what can I do about them? Well, if elected V. P. - External, I can create and chair committees to perform research on the issues concerning students. Issues such as tuition and health care. Then, based on those conclusions, take te appropriate course crates boagte beaanal obeak hak ts CHING ioe student body to external groups such as CFS and the government. So do you want? Someone with a plan, or someone without one? __ , Gtr.
