Yellow daffodils look pretty with white cherry blossoms, and the Pyrus japonica com- bines well with white narcissus; but pansies or violets always look best when they are quite alone. Certain flowers are graceful, others are cheerful; sume are bold and effective, like the jack in the pulpit; some are delicate, like the lily of the valley. It stands to reason that these must be arranged so their characteristics are not hidden. It is ossible to produce a pretty group of Soetereteps and daisies, whose gold and white effect is always charming; but the addition of a single pink blossom spoils all! To keep tlowers looking well the water should be changed daily and old bléssoms thrown away. Then the groups should be carefully adjusted with relation to each cther, so no two tall specimens should appear together A little sunlight may do no harm, but cut flowers exposed to the full rays of : powerful sun wilt at ind a pretty arrangeinent Early morning ; pick flowers Phey should b = ; ilua t A i LOSSO1 We treat f rs carelessly—a f them | od in the heat of without a good sprinkling is nasatish out in tie Sal 1ualtl of water. The Little Chicks, Asa precaution against little chicks, grease t with fresh Jard on under the wing but do not mix coal oil with it. It is unnecessary and some- times injures the chicks’ eyes, as sul- phur will also. Use no grease of an kind on the hen while sitting. Use sul- phur, or what is better, get a dime's worth of insect powder of your drug- gist and make a sifter by taking an empty baking powder can and pnuching the lid full of small nail holes. Sift the nest well and the hen, in feathers of the back and fluff; or what is s ill better where itis at hand, a few stems of to- bacco in the I ottom of the nest is a per- fect protection. Of course fresh ones must be provided when resetting hens, as they will finally lose their strength. Sometimes they are taken when very dry and pounded up fine, which makes it convenient for use. A handful is then sprinkled into the straw as we make up the nest. The egg tester is quite a convenience, I find Fi rexainple, you set four hens atone time. When they have passed the eighth day test them, and quite fre- quently all the fertile eggs can be put under three hens and the fourth one re lice on the e mother slightly keel bone and ’ ceive fresh exys.
