Stocks In Newl958 High NEW YORK (AP)—The stock market plugged ahead doggedly last week to make another high for 1958. The moderate advance of the blue chips which makeup the av- erages had considerable competi- tion from the lower-priced, more speculative issues which once again took a prominent place among the list of traéng favor- ites. ' The Associated Press average of 60 stocks rose $1.30 to $175.60, topping the previous ’58 peak of $175.40. The Dow-Jones industrial average also rose to a high for the year, 480.17. The market was just below the year’s high as the week started and it inched forward day by day, just squeezing over the top in the final session. The action in the pre-holiday session came as a surprise. Although the advance was modest it was achieved on a. brisk pick—up in volume—an unusual phenomenon prior to a long Fourth of July weekend. In the past, such mar- ket days have been sluggish. The appmach ofthe summer industrial doldrums was fore- shadpwed by the first drop in steel industry pooduction in ,eIght weeks. Uncertainty over the steel price, situation continued. Approval by GOng-ress of Alas- kan statehood stimulated Alaska Juneau which gained 1%,:a large percentage rise for this low- priced stock. Steel OutIOOk v Stays Brighter CLEVELAN D (AID—«Delay in boosting steel prices has given the steelmaking ind ustry a slightly improved outlook for guly, Steel magazine said Sun- day. « ‘ , Shipments will be substantially lower this month than in June, when ‘ there was considerable hedge buying to beat at antic— ipated July 1 price rise, the trade .publication says. , The general price rise did not come, but it will have to come eventually if the industry is to maintain profit levels near the five per cent recorded during the first half, Steel comments. Delay in boosting prices set the stage for more hedging, the mag- azine says. Steelrnaking operations drop ped 10 points to 53 per cent of rated capacity last Week; with much of the drop blamed on the US. holiday, during which steel plants were manned by skeleton crews only. Production totalled about 1,430,000 net tons for ingots and castings. ' ’ ’ " on the strength of Chicao sales.
