Andrews, arrived in Charlottetown Wednesday night. His principal mission here was with a. view to becoming established in the fox business. The doctor is one of the most. successful medical men in the "Huh" and enioysalarge prac- tice. The Island is attracting great interest in Boston and Dr. MacDon- ald says the'Americans are only he- coming alive to the possibilities of. the great Island industry.. I-Ie left on return to Boston Saturday morn- ing. » LUMBER BOOM.-There has been this year an unusual activity in the lumberimarket in this Province, and the cause can be traced to the fox industry. For there has been a great amount of fox-ranch building, not only as regards the pens and houses for the foxes themselves, but in many cases of new dwellings for the keepers of the ranches. Lumber- men have consequently benefited from these circumstances, and there has been a greater importation oi lumber into the Island this season Y Y. Messrs. L. M. Poole & Co., one of the leading lumber merchants ofthe Island, the lumber imported this year was at the average of a vessel- load a day. RETURNED-Among those arriving in Charlottetown on Friday night was Mr. Fred Cameron,-the popular jockey and one of the hcst known and best liked men in racing circles in the Maritime Provinces. Mr. Cameron returned from Brockton Fair where he had been driving the Nova Scotia horse, Dlngola with which he had been so successful at the Halifax Ex- hibition. On this occasion, however, Fred did not succeed in getting Din- goln first past the pole. The race was run in, 2.l1} and the fastest time in which Dingole. won at Hali- fax was 2.12. Still Fred thinks that his horse ought to have made that time; but, he said, Dingola did not run at his best; he got away badly and did not appear to want to run. GIRLS IN TROUBLIO--'I‘he two girls, of ages between sixteen and seventeen, who were arrested in Char- lottetown on Friday for having stol- en a few dollars' worth of clothing, on the preceding night, from thc premises of Messrs. E. Rice and H. Court , Prince street, were brought before Mr. Magistrate Martin at th City Magistrate's Court, on Satur- day. They were defended by Mr. Don- _ald 'A. McKinnon. The evidence for the prosecution established the ident- ity of the clothes, which had been hanging on lines in the yard, and were missed about nine o’clock at night. Sgt. Bradley, who had ellect- ed the arrest of the defendants, and had discovered the missing clothing, deposed as to these circumstances. A portion of the clothing was found under the mattress of the bed in the room occupied by the girls in the house of a Mrs. Taylor in which they lived. When this discovery was made, the Sgt., said, Mrs. Taylor said to one of the girls, "Maggie why - did you do such a thing?" to which the girl replied, "I am no worse than Katie;" she insisted that the other girl had as much to do with the affair as she had,-a. charge which the other stoutly denied. Both de- fendants gave, evidence. One, who seemed to he the instigator or the more daring oi the two, admitted the taking of the clothes, but aver- red that her intention was to return them on the following morning, which intention, she claimed, was upset hy Sgt. Bre.dley's early appearance on the scene. The other girl, she snid, accompanied her on the excursion on which she annexed the clothing. The second girl, however, while admittini that she had accompanied No. 1 and was told by her about the taking of the clothes, protested her innocence of complicity in the matter. I-Ile Honor found both equally guilty, boldness and dexterity of lingers than the other; it was only, he thought, because she lacked these attributies that No. 2 did not take a more ac- tive part in the matter. Mr. McKin- non asked His Worship to exercise his clemency under the Criminal Code, and give the defendants an oppo tunity of reform. His Worship acted? on the suggestion, and sus- pended the . sentences of the defend- ants, ordering them to sign bonds for their good behaviour during the period of the suspension. The girl who was foremost in the theft and who had been in trouble before, was not only made to sign a bond in the sum of $100, but her father was also required to enter into _ a bond in a similar amount, making him rc- sponsihle for his daughter’s good be- haviour for a year. For a similar term the sentence of the other girl was suspended, she alone being re- quired to sign a hond of $100 for her good behaviour. TUESDAY. MEETING POSIPONED.-Mr. J. E. B. MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE. -Some fears are entertained in con- nection with the disappearance of Captain Daniel Brennan, second offi- cer of the-Rocky Point ferry steamer, Hillsborough. On Saturday night. he camo across as usual in the Hills- borough and accompanied Captain Murphy homcward as far as the cor- ner oi Prince and Richmond streets. Here they parted, Captain Murphy crossing the square to make a call, the other presumably proceeding homeward. The men are brothers-in- law and live together. On Captain Murphy's arrival home a few minutes inter he was surprised to find that Captain Brennan had not arrived. No uneasiness was felt until the ah- sence was unduly prolonged when cn- quiries 'were set on foot. Nothing has been seen or heard of him since and yesterday the police were noti- fied. Up to a late hour last night the police had no cluc. It is feared that he may have returned to the steamer for something forgottennnd met with an accident.
