' Memory Vex-nes, 2-4-Golden Text, I I lu.:-ls lx, 7-Commentary Px-eiiarod ‘ _ by Rev. D. M. Stearns. I[Copyright, 190-I, by American Press Assoclntiom] ' This lesson seems to follow iunnedi- ately upon the last in the regular order of events and, like the lust, is recorded both by Matthew and Luke. The lirst verse of this chapter should certainly Ibe included in our lesson, as it is the ‘key to the lesson, and the trnnsiigura- tion is the unfolding and fuliillnient of His saying in that verse. The fact that each of the evangellsts records the trsnsilgurntion immediately after that saying concerning the kingdom of God ia suihclent evidence that they so un- derstood it. Peter also, speaking of this event, calll it fthe power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (II Pet. i, 163 18). The favored three who were with Him when He raised to life the ruler’s daughter, and afterward in His agony in Gathsemane,Were privileged on this occasion to be eyewitnesses of His majesty. Why these three instead of the others and why John should come nearer than James or Peter we may not perhaps know, but we do know that few seem willing to be His choice ones, His Nszarites, although, as in re- demption, it seems to be for “whoso- ever will.” The old question still stands, "Who, then, is willing?" (I Chron. xxix, 5). Luke lays that He went up into n mountain to pray, and as He prayed the fashion ot His countenance was altered, and His raiment was white and giisterlng. Our lesson says "shin- ing, exceeding white as snow," and Matthew nays “white as the light” and thl.tHisfnco did shine as the sun. Some- what thus He appeared to Daniel long before He came in the desh and many yearn after His ascension to John _in Patmos (Dan. x, 6; Rev. i, 10); 'T§__ miracle was not so much that~Ha.w thus trsnsiigured, but rather thatsti glory could thus be veiled those thirty- three years in a mortal body. What an inspiration tolook forward to the time when ihese bodies in which we now live shall be' immortal. incorraptibie, fashioned like unto His gloriouslbody; when the righteous shall shine forth ss the sun in the kingdom of their Father!
