L'As- somption, met at 104 Euston St., City, the home of Mrs. Chaisson. mother of the wounded soldier, Pte. L. Chais- son. who returned on Saturday last, to tender tr- him a reception on be- .lalf or the Acadians of this city. Mr. J. F. Arsenault presided. After he had made a few remarks explain- ing the purpose of the gathering, the following address was read: Mr. Leonard Chaisson: _ Dear Mr.. Chaisson,-We, your friends and compatriots, feel that we would be remiss in our duty and poor friends. indeed, if we failed to convey to you some slight expression of _c-ur admiration for you and an apprecia- lion of the great and noble scarflce you have made in our behalf ' For we fully understand, that you were under no greater obligation than we, to take your place in the ranks and go forward to fight for king and country; but out of your love for right and freedom, you generously donned the "khaki" and for many long and weary months battled nobiy and val- iantly in the cause of justice and li- berty. We realize, too, the great", suf- ierings you must have undergone,- the hardships of the camp, the terrible work in the trenches, and finally your wounds, which in one less brave and vigorous would have meant, early death. Then came the' long and weary :lays in hospitals, among strangers, far away from friends and relatives. All this, and more, you-have nobiy endured that we who remained at . home, might enjoy peace and free- dom. So now, that you have return- ed to your friends with feeling of great deeds done and high resolves accomplished, we gladly extend to you the glad hand of welcome and friend- ship, and hope and pray that your ‘ wounds may soon be healed and your -_ health be fully restored. so that you may long enjoy the fruits of your noble sacrifice. and be the solace and comfort, of that loving mother. who is so proud of you today. We assure you also that your deeds will not soon _be forgotten, and that in the future. you will have the double satisfaction of having nobiy and cheerfully done your duty, and the esteem and grati- tude of your many friends. Your French-Acadian Compatr|ots_ After the reading of the address. Private Chaisson made a suitable re- ply, in the course of which he referred to the non-reception which he and his comrade, Private Knockwood, had met with on their arrival in their native province not because he cared so much for the honor personally, but in order that in tho future proper treat- ment might be given t'o other wound- ed soldiers returning home. He con- cluded by thanking all present for their address and assured them of his hearty appreciation of their kindeof. Mr. Isidore Buote and Mr. Cyrlac Gallant made short speeches eulogiz~ ing the brave soldier and expressing the sincere wish that he might soon be completely cured of his wounds. Pro. J. H. Blanchard was the next speaker. After having made fitting reference to the sacrifices made by Mr. Chaisson, the hardships under- gone by him, and how pleased they were to have him b_ack again with them, he went on to show the part the French had taken in Chrlstianlz- lng Europe in the past, and that the Acadians with the blood of those brave ancestors coursing through their veins should feel proud of such as Private Chsisson. He said emphati- cally that they should db all they pos- sibly could for the returned soldiers. not merely give them a. welcome on their arrival and then forget, them, but recognize them ever after and help ' them get the best possible posi- tions. He said they should insist on this. and the best way of doing so was by keeping the question before the public.. discussing lt. etc. Mr. Blsnchard’s speech was most eloquent and inspiring and was listened to with the greatest attention. Tile accounts were read, which showed a substantial balance in favor of the institute. A very satisfactory business was done through the Insti- tute this year in the co-operative pur- chasing of seed. wire, bran, oil-cake, etc. Two high class grain graders are operated by the Institute to the sat- isfaction of all concerned. Two reg- istered pure-bred hours, a Yorkshire and a. Berkshire, also two registered pure'-bred Shorthorn bulls were pur- chased by the ilustltute are at the sor- vice of the members. The volume of business for the current year donc by this Institute will undoubtedly place it in the foremost rank of Is- land Inistitutes. iln 1914 this Insti- tute was ranked third in thc provincc and in 1915 the volume of this insti- tute was only surpasaed by three In- stitutes out of 55 in active' operation on the island. These statements may be verified by turning up the annual report of the Departme/nt of Agricul-I ture for these respective years, where-' in is reported the financial statement of every Institute in the province. A progressive board of 'nine directors were appointed to guide the helm of affairs for the coming year and a ‘large membership is again enrolled, which insures another successful year. Mr. McDonald representing the Associated Farmers' Co-operative Co. Ltd., of Charlottetown was' present by invitation and addressed the meeting re the benefits of a member- ship with the Associated Farmers’ Co., and as a result many farmers here are resolved to join. =”§|‘ SCRUFULA AND ALL HUMURS GIVE WAY ` .
