Edna May Oliver and James Gleason are seen aagin as the New England spinster with a. Sherlock Holmes complex and a wise-cracking but dense police inspector, respect- ively, the same characters they cre- ated in “Tile Penguin Pool Murder" and “Murder on the Blackboard." The story centers around the mysterious death of a prominent man aboard a seaplane flying from t Los Angeles to Catalina Island. All of the scenes are laid on and around the island. Hildegarde Withers (Miss Oliver), 9, passenger, insists the man has been murdered and wires to New York for Inspector Piper (James Gleeson). The seven passengers on the plane and the two pilots are all suspected of the crime at various times but it is not until the last scene that the guilty one is un- masked. Miss oliver and Mr. Gleason, fea- tured at the top of a fine cast, give delightful portrayals of the snoopy school-teacher-sieuth and the fast- talklng -police odicer. 1 Additional comedy is furnisbed,; by Chick Chandler, one of the sus- pected pilots, Spencer Charters as the slow-moving, unemotional Cat- alina police chief and Arthur Hoyt as the fussy police surgeon. "For “The Mighty Barnum" has everything that any picturegoer could want-and gobs of it. Wallace Beery oners a superb characterization as the world's greatest snowman in this colorful, comedy-filled story. Adolphe Menjou gives the best performance of his career as_Mr. B. Walsh. his tippling manager and _'Virginia Bruce is enchanting as Jenny Lind, the lovely Swedish Nightingale, whom Barnum, in s moment of sublime respite from his midgets, fat ladies. sword swallow- - 'gre and the rest of his freaks, intro- duced to a. breathless America. The film, begins just a century -ago, in 1835, when Barnum left his _ failing Bowery grocery, rented a. liv- ...ery stable and became a showman exhibiting such acquisitions as a two-headed calf, a couple of reptile . monstrosities and an used nosrooi named .loice Heth, hailed as 160 _ years old and the nurse of the in- fant George Washington. “Wallace Beery In ‘_‘Migh?' E ward' 1 The expose of this exhibit as a. hoax and thesubsequent breaking up of the museum by an enraged crowd of patrons when _the bearded lady shows masculine characteris- tics; the burning _of the museum; the triumphant debut of Jenny Lind and the fiasco which Barnum’s magnificent dinner he gives for her, are highlights of the picture, which 1° Walsh parading proudly down the street in front of Jumbo, the world’s largest elephant, heralding the in- ception of Barnum and Bailey, the Greatest Show On_Ea.rth. _ _ The story is studded with warm human touches and chock full of hilarious comedy. Janet Beecher shines as the stern New England wife who fi-owns on _Bamum's wild ventures and Rochelle Hudson is excellent as his pretty ward, who has the misfortune to fall madly in love with the tippling Mr. Walsh. The sequences showing how the broke and discouraged Barnum, having lost his fortune neglecting his business to squire the lovely Jenny Lind, is inspired with the courage to start anew by a chance meeting with the tiny Tom Thumb will pu a lulnp in your throat and. a tear in your eye. ‘ ' ~-- __ A Ratification Of ' Franco-Canadian .»- Treaty Sought (C.
