Sept 14—’l‘ho mining section of the Toronto exchange showed some uneasiness today over the porsistant weakness in Teck Hughes and offerings of the popular gold traders became quite active in tbs afternoon. One of the features oi’ the day's trading was the strong display given by Dominion Coal Preferred which closed at 94, up 4% points over yes- terdays closing level. Today's level is a new high for the year, which is equivalent to a. new- high since the middle of 11928. Today's advance is a continuation of a. movement which began earlier this week. On ‘Tuesday it: rose two points to 80 and yester- day another 9% to 89%. With to- day's extension ,a total of 16 points has been gained during the current week. The Standard Statistics Co. aver- age declined 2 points to 67.3, only about a. point; above the 1934 low touched July 25. Rail and Utility shares on the average moved into new low ground. Clouds of pessimism thickened in the financial district for no obvious olines in grains and persistent heavi- ness in bond prices made holders of a. few prominent stocks. It was asserted in brokerage quar- ters that. some belated liquidation was taking place preliminary to Oct. 1. when full federal control of the security exchanges becomes etIective, including operations oi so-called "inside interests.“ Except: for some cheerful accounts of retail trade, the business news af- forded little nourishment for hopes of an early upturn in production. l Losses of 1 to 3 points were num- erous among active shares.
