Banfield of the British and Foreign Bible Society in the course of an illustrated lecture at the Y. M- 0.! A. sing song held in Zion Church last evening. Mr. Banfield spoke at the Baptist Church yesterday morn- ing and at Trinity Church last ev- ening. The address at the Y. M. C. A. meeting centred around the wol-I: of William Harris, a native of West Africa, one man with a Bible, who at the age of sixty began to preach to the people of that uncivllizecl country, with such success that in a few years he made 100,000 converts. Western Africa is divided into the Grain Coast, the Ivory Coast the Gold Coast and the Slave Coast, whlc_\ extend 3,500 miles along the coast line. It has been estimated that during the period when slave trade was canted on 100,000 Africans died as a result of the traffic. Two- thirds of the world's supply of cocoa comes from the Gold Coast. The nat- ive has little to say as to whether he shall work or not. They are put to work building motor roads. For hundreds of miles inland there is a system of lagoons around which the natives live on their farms. Harris stayed in each village only s. short time, during which he per- suaded the people to brealo their idols, and follow Biblical teaching, and build churches. For ten years after Harris’ departure the people prayed to God for a missionary. The chiefs in many cases were minor prophets. Missionaries were sent from the Wesleyan Mission in Eng- land. The story stirred England when the facts became known. Har- ris had appointed twelve apostles irl each village to be spiritual super- visors. The French Government attempted to stamp out the relig- ion, but in vain. Cement churches on Friday evening, March dth.
