Thisisin a country where they ridicule our interest in royalty. A definition by W. D. Howells:—‘‘A bad novel is that which flatters and fills the reader with self-conceit. Such a book is full of mischief. A healthy novel is that which makes you think better of your neighbor and fellow-man.” The wealthiest colored man in the United States is said to be Tonie Lufon, a French quadroon of New Orleans, whose fortune is estimated at $1,100,000. An organ of the colored people in the South says that the colored people of the South pay taxes on $90,000,000. A number of the Methodist preachers from the lower provinces passing through Ottawa on their way to the general conference fell into the hands of the St. John Sun’s Ottawa cor- respondent, who took them to Sir John A. McDonald’s house and made them acquainted with the premier. A London despatch says that in the House of Commons on the 31st ult. Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, chief secretary for Ireland, stated that during the riots in Belfast one of the head constables had been killed, five offi- cers and six members of the constabulary had been seriously. wounded, and that altogether 322 policemen had been more or less injured in various encounters with the rioters. On Tuesday morning the lower floor in the warehouse of Mr. Geo. Morrison’s, St. John, N. B., gave way and precipitated a large apron! of salt into the tide which flows un- er the building. A good deal of the salt was destroyed at once, but a portion was saved. Some puncheons of molasses also fell through the floor, but were raised again without much or any damage being done to the contents. A Georgia rattlesnake got into a pantry the other day and found some eggs which it swallowed. Then it crawled partly through the handle of-a-jug,~ and, finding some more eggs, swallowed them. This brought about an interesting state of affairs, for the greedy snake found it im- possible to get out of the jug handle, being unable to move either backward or forward. In its efforts to escape it made a great rumpus, and it was soon killed by the awakened inmates of the house. Three strange fish made their appearance in Placentia harbor, Nfld., a few days ago. Armed with a harpoon and_zifle, John F. in killing one of the monsters. It is 20 feet in length and 5 feet in diameter. In color it is nearly all black with one large stripe on each side. Its body was covered with a coat of fat resembling whale fat, two and ahalf inches thick. The strangest thing about the creature is its very large teeth, which fit so,closely when its jaws are shut that scarcely any water penetrates | through them. Advices from Ching Foo Foo, chief city | of the province of Sechuen, state that the natives of the eastern part of that province, with those of northern Cochin, China, have risen against the Christians and are mas- sacreing them and destroying their:pro- perty. Th’s active persecution is attributed to the imprudenco of English and American missionaries. In Cochin, China, alone 50 christions have already -been killed, their houses burned and their farms destroyed. In moony a Aeon massacre of christians in reported to be in progress, and they are iallet wherever found. : <a = et ———--- ‘No physic, sir in mine!’ A good story come from a boys’ boarding-school in Jersey. The diet was monotonous and constipating, and the learned Principal decided to introduce some old style physic in the apple-sauce, and await the happy results. One bright lad, the smartest in school, discovered the secret mine in his sauce, and pushing back his plate, shouted to the pedagogue, ‘No physic, sir, in mine. My dad told me to use nothin’ but Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Purgative Pellets, and they are a doing their duty like a charm!’ They are anti-billious and purely vegetable. sandw Summerside Exports.
