We are told our lambs have a flavour all their own—. i Mr. Stewart-"Do you take credit for that?" The Premier went on to give it as his conviction that the excellent condition of our agriculture was due OQOOOO-O to the splendid efforts and abilities cf the Minister of Agriculture and his department. The speaker next dealt with the seed potato direction. praising the work of the Potato Growers Associa- tion in this connection, and alluding to the close co-operatlon between that organisation and the Depart- ment of Agriculture. Last year many carloads of seed potatoes left the province. It is true that prices were low last year; but the produc- tion was s record one. And in 1021 the Potato Growers Association did $2,000,000 worth of business at a cost of less than 2 per cent. to the farm- ers. He further alluded to the benefits brought by hog grading. Ann yet, he said, the Leader of tho Opposition has the ternerlty to say we are doing nothing for agriculture. Now, it has been said that I went to Ottawa to address the ladies. Mr. SkWI-Ilr-"ISDT it true?" The Premier-Is it fair or right to criticise me for accepting an invi- tation of this kind? Every Premier, except Mr. Tssohereau accepted. And as to the Rotary Club of Quebec, I was asked to address this. not once o1- twlce but», three times. The Pre- mier said that; he gave them a de- scription of the excellent conditions to be found in this Province. ‘rho speaker stated that he was not flattering himself that he was hon- oured in accepting the invitation of the Ladies Club in Ottawa. No doubt Mr. Stewart could have acquitted himself fully as well-if not better. Should behave gone he would have heard no word of criticism from me. Mr. Stewart (rising to a point, o1 order)—I didn't, criticize; I merely stated a fact, I am glad the Premier went. and that he is such a good ladies man. (laughter) _ The Premler-"All the legislation was prepared and ready before I wcnt there-something unique in the history of the House." He deplor- ed the insinuatlons which, ho con- sidered were being made against him. ‘ ' ‘ Alludlng to our trade with the central provinces in farm product-s he felt we lay under a handicap due to freight rates, etc. It is only by reason of our superior quality that we might hope to enter the mar- kets there. The government is do- ing what it can to help. and we now have a trade commissioner in Toronto. He had hoped after the repre- sentations of November 8rd, 1927. that wo would get an increase 1n subsidy, but his expectations in that regard, had not been realized. Tm Premiers of the Central and Western Provinces had then been very sympathetic to the Island's claims. The precis of that meetin! stated that “A strong plea. for the interests of Prince Edward Island was made by Mr. Saunders." (The speaker went on to quote from the precis in support of his contentions.) While we expected some consider- ation, still. there have been many dc- mands. There was the car ferry. and the Federal Government have been fairly generous. The C. N. R. have been spending $15,000,000 in the Mai-itimes. Unfortunately, just when wo had put in our demands for in- creased subsidy the request for the new car ferry had to be made.
