aggressive and ilegrant omcial violation
ofthe Sabbath one week previous. We
deeply regret and deplore this silence.
We regret it on behalf of the day of rest
thus iawlessly invaded. We regret it on
account of pastors and churches whose
silence will inevitably be construed into
consent and condonation for what was
done. We regret it for our own sake,
missingas we do the support on which
we had counted with all confidence and
trust in this matter.
, l We regret it for the misoonstruction
that will hereafter be placed upon the
attitude of induential religious bodies

church and the Baptist church have
hitherto stood forth as champions of the
cause of Sabbath observance. Their
leading churches and pastors are here in
this city of Charlottero wi . Here occurred
some conspicuous acts of that most 1
aggressive and wide-spread violation of
the Sabbath ever witnessed in Canada.
What was done was done with the full
knowledge of the pastors and churches
referred to. And they have nothing to _
say on the subject! Hundreds of the
members of their congregation waited for
them tospeak, but they are silent. We
deeply regret It. `
We search in vain for reasons that will
satisfy. Surely it cannot be that the »

has taken its stand against the action of
that fateful Sunday, strong in sense of
duty which bade us denounce the wrong.
We are not shaken in that conviction
by the fact that down to the hour of this
writing we have not received one word
of support or oommendation from any
city pastor. We thank those pastor’s
and elders who from other parts of the
province have either privately or fu-
publlcation sent us the evidenoesfof their
appreciation. We believe, indeed, that
the heart of this Sabbath-keeping
Island is sound on the question at issue,
land this makes us the more regret the
l_oniinous_silence of the spirituallguides
in this City.
We have felt that Tun GUARDIAN
could not aiford to be silent on this
matter. And we feel most strongly that
our pastors and congregations cannot
ail'ord to be silent. We still§think they
willbe compelled to speak , either to con-
demn or to condone what has been done,
or to explains silence which has become
painful to many members}of the various
congregations. We are not complaining;
we are content to stand alone, if needs
be; we have no desire to lay down a
course for those who ought to be wiser
