Dr, Ferguson Dr. mguson in a short address congratulated the people of Wel- lington» on their good fortune in having one of the Carnegie dem- onstratidns in their village. He also congratulated Premier Mac- Millan on his success in obtaining a Carnegie grant for his people, and predicted that in time to come he ' will have marked in his books of record that the obtaining of the Comets library grant was the most bmeflclal action of his whole career. He had heard excellent reports of Premier MacMillan and of his un- tiring efforts in the interests of education from Dr. Keppock who visited the Island recently. Dr. Ferguson stated that the sys- tem used by the Carnegie library for Island readers has nothing short 0f what is used in the best system in other parts of Canada. He added no one has anything to fear 0i the quality of the books while Miss Bateson is in charge. Dr. Ferguson said, the Island was fortunate in being peopled with the four great races, French, Scotch, Englifh and Irish, who all have n. kecn appreciation of the value of books and education and he felt sure that. when the three years had elapsed in which the libraries are carried on free by the Carnegie Corporation that their Prince Ed- ward Island Government would be convinced of the great: value of the libraries and would sec to it that they would continue to func- "011- DY- Ferguson paid a. wonder- ful tribute to the Island scenery, glliematc and hospitality of its peo. He spoke particularly n! the great benefit that this library would be to the French speaking residents as there were many French books on the library shelves and it was a great opportunity for every Frenchman to continue the study of the French language, and become acquainted with the best French literature and acquire a knowledge of the history of France, the home of their forefathers. He urgently asked them that they would not neglect to use this mean; to further their knowledge of France and all things pertaining to its lupguage, history and traditions and also to improve their general knowledge. l Professor Blanchard Pipfessor Blanchard in voicing his lgratitude that Wellington and distlticts surrounding had been rc- membered in the Library scheme that the gift of the Carnegie Lib- rary should and he felt sure is rc- gufled as one of the greatest thmgs that ever come to the Pro- vince and that since the advent of Free Schools 83 years ago nothing h done so much for the young people thant his gift. The French Schools provided the kcy to know- ledge, but, no Government until the present time realized that librar- ies are the siorc house of informa- ilon which arc necessary to assist he schools in their work or edu- cation. '.l‘hls wonderful gift has been made possible through the efforts of Premier MacMlllan, who in his young dnys felt the want of good books. To the older people of the Island good literature was dif- ficult to obtain only a. few having good libraries, he trusted the young people would take advantage of their present day favourable posi- tion. l The public men of Prince Edward Island todly are adcpLs at feeling [or El \\\\\\:\\__\\\\\\\\\ CHEVROLET i \\\\\\ \\\\\\ \\\ ~\\\ \\ \ \\\\\\\\\ All General Motors rari- md Irurbr ism! m: ranrl-nirn! term: Iarougb GMAL, Gcilrral Motnn‘ awn Iimwpayment plan.
