Better than grandeur, better than gold, Than rank and tities a thousand fold, Is a healthy body and mind at ease, And simple pleasures that always please ; A heart that can feel for another's woe, Ad share its joy with a genial glow ; With sympat.ces large enough to enfold All men as bevthers, 16 better than gold. Better than gokd is a conscience clear, Though tviling for bread iu an humble sphere, Doubiy blessed with content and health, Untired by the lust or the cares of wealth ; Lowly living and loftly thought Adorn and ennobles a poor man’s cot ; For mind and morals, in natures plan, Ave the genuine tests of a gentleman. Better than gold is the sweet repose Of the sons of toil when their labors close ; Better than gold is the poor man’s sleep, Avil the balin that drops on his slumber deep, Bring sleepy draughts to the doway bed, Where luxury pillows its aching head, But he his simple opiate deeins A shorter rouve to the land of dreams. B-tter than gold is a thinking mind, Taat in the realm of books can fiad A treasure surpassing Australian ore, And live with the great and good of yore ; The sage’s lore and the poet's lay, Te gl wies of empire pass away ; The world’s great dream will thus unfold, Aad yield a pleasure better than gold; Bz ‘ter than gold is a peaceful home, W weu all the fireside characters come ; T .e shrine of love, the heaven of life, H, lowed by m tier, or s ster or wife, H> vever humble the home may be, Or tired with sorrow by heav ns decree, Tae bleesings that never were bought nor sold, And centre there, are better than gold. —~-—— -—_- > ap Housshold Hints. Clothes pins are rendered more flex‘ble and durable by boiling in clean water from fire to ten minutes every two week-. They should be dried quickly, aud kept in strong, bigs, free from dust. The lines are likewise boiled every month. When gold or silver lace happens to be tarnished, the best liquor that can be used for restoring its lustre is spirits of wine; it should be warmed before it is applied to the tarnished spot. This ap- plication will preserve the color of the siik ur embroidery. To relieve from the terrible effects of runoing a sail io the fot of a min or horse, take peach leaves, bruise them; apply to the wound, coufine with bandage, and the cure is as if by migic. Renew the application twice a day, if necessary ; but ove upplication usually doves the work, There is scarcely any ache to which children ure subject so hard to bear und difficult to cure asthe ear-ache; but there is a remedy never koown to fail. Take a bit of cotten batting, put it upon » ' pioch of black pepper, gather it up and tie it, dip in sweet oil, und insert in the ear. Put flinnel bandage ever the head to keep it warm, Lt will give immediate relief. It is a bad plan to make up the beds immediately after breakfast. ‘The sleeping apartwents iu a house should be thoroughly wiredevery day. Bedsshouid be opeued every moruing te the suo and to the utmusphere. Do not be in tou much harte to get the chambers in order. Several hours should he devoted w their ventilation after the night. Lei the sheets und blankets be spre.d ove: separste chairs, the mattrusses lifted apart, uad the pure moruing air be al- lowed to get into every uovk aud cranny of the room befure the beds are made. Better evdure a little untidiness (hau loss of health. A good starch for shirt-bosoms is mad: thus: ‘take two oucces of five gum arabic powder, put iuto a pitcher,’ ana pour ou a pivut or more of builiug water, to the streugth you desire, and thea, having covered it let itstand all night; in the woruing pour it carefully from the dregs into a clean bottle, cork i aud keep it for use. A tabiespvontul of gum-water stirred into a pint of Starch made iu the usual manuer, will give tu lawn, either white or printed a lovk of ucwaess, when nothing else can restore them after they have been washed.” RANKIN HOUSE CHARLUTTETUWN, P. Nov. 30, 1873—2aw tf } The Greatest Medical Diseovery since the Creation of Man, or since the Commencement of the Christian Era. There never has heen a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has deen caused by outward application as the present, It is an undisputed fact that over half of the entire populationof the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. Dr. MELVIN’s Carsicum Porous PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them, te act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than a hundred of the ordinary kind. All other plasters are slow of action. and rejuire to be worn continually to effect acure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the ‘nstant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physicians in all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or less used as a medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent diate that its advan- tages in a porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful eures effected by Dr. MELvIN’s CApsicum Porous PLASTERS, and their superiority over al) other plasters, they now actually prescribe them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, pain in the side and hack. and all such cases as havé required the use of plasters orliaiment, After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and yor want acevtain cure. ask your druggist for Dn. Metvin’s Capsicum Porous PLASTER, You ean hardly believe your own convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and uick in its action, you can rely on its safety Oo. the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from Jead and other poixonons material commonly used ia the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a sufficient guarantee of its merits, and one plaster wil) r“i hundreds to vour friends. Ask your druggist for Dr. MELVIN’s CAPStI- cum Porous PLasren, and take no other; or, on receipt of 25 cents for one. $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, they will be mailed, post paid, to any address ia the United States or Canadas.
