Losses outnumbered gains 4 to 1 in base metals. Key issues dipped after initial firming tendencies. Smelters was down 2 1-4 at 126 1-4 and International Nickel lost 1 1-4 at 35 1-4. Western oils climbed ahead at the opening bell to touch tlic highest figure on the exchanges index since January 1938. The list began to sag towards noon and closed down about two from yesterday on the index. A few junior golds traded neav- ily for gains while the senior llsl. moved downhill.
