"it is always a source oi disap- pointment to me thatythousands ol boys in this country, yes. hund- reds in this Province. should be denied the fun. adventure and comradeshlp of scouting. and the undoubted training for citizenship it provider, because there simply are not enough men willing to make a contribution in Canada: future by offering their services in leadership. and not enough money to train all our leaders if we secured them. "Not only has Scouting a job to do in providing a positive pro- gramme. but it has. at the same time. to counteract some of the modern tendencies which have he- come so noticeable in the last de- cade or two. and which seem to lead youth farther and larther a- way lrom some of the basic prin- ciples of good citizenship. Detrimental Tendencies "Dr. J. B. Kirkpatrick. of Sask- atchewan. dhslrman of the Nation- al Cemmittee on Community Stan- dards of the Canadian Citizenship Council. in his report last year named four tendencies which his committee! felt were detrimental to community life. "The first he called 'spectator- ltls'. the symptoms of which are seen in the growing numbers who are content to watch athletic per- formances. but who seldom take part in any form ol athletics themselves. This trend is further indicated in the people who line up for a city block to see a sec- ond rate movie. while such things as amateur dramatics pine away for lack of enough people to take part in them. "The remit of this sort of thing is that one loses the vital power to entertain himself. Give him an evening alone and he is lost. To quote Dr. Kirkpatrick! own words: 'He is always seeking ways to kill time-he never has any time to spend'. "The second trend is that of commercialization. which is a di- rect result of the first trend. Com- mercial entertainment Ls essential but the danger lies in its spread to every phase of recreation. If this trend is not checked. it will not be long beforetpeople have completely lost the art of enter- taining themselves. "The third trend is that subtle one, which appears to take recre- ation nway from the basic institu- tions. ihe home. the church and the school. These euentlal relat- ionships are basic. because these three institutions are primarily engaged in helping the child to acquire those beliefs and ideals which must serve them as an an- chor in llle.. Where recreation is of the non-active and completely commercial type the basic institu- tions sre relieved of what is their Gallant - Mclionna Wedding St. Joachlm's Church, Vernon River. was the scene of a pretty wedding on Wednesday morning.
