E. I. Credit Union League at the annual meeting at st. Dunstan's University yester- day: Once again it affords me great pleasure to greet. and welcome you to this. the fifteenth annual meet- ing of the P. E. 1. Credit Union League Llrnited. It is also my pleasure to welcome all the visitors who have come to help us make this convention is success. It is with deep sorrow that we have to record the passing of our beloved sov- ereign King George VI on Febru- ary 6th of this year. He was a kindly man, and gave his subjects an example of living which we could well emulate. The elevation to the throne of Queen Elizabeth 11 was an event of great rejoicing by all her subjects, and especially for our Island people as it was only a few months before her ascension to the throne that we had her in our midst. It is also with deep regret that we record the death of Rev. Father Douglas Mac'Neil who died on De- cember 19th, 1951. lie was a real co-operator and his work in the credit union and co-operative movement will long be remembered by the people at home and abroad. ATTENDED CONVENTION past year. savings have increased by over 350,000, making the total assets of all credit unions, as of September 30th. 1951. S80(,0l8.'i0. It is not necessary at this time to go into details of operation of the credit unions. Your Managing Dir- eotor. Mr. Dennis, will deal with these in detail. But I want to say. before we go any further. that the progress shown is not sufficient. Sixteen credit unions show a de- crease in assets from the previous year. two credit unions have not been active. and it great number of credit unions have only made very minor increases. Fourteen credit unions have increased their assets by 51,000.00 or over. Tignish Credit Union has increased their assets by over 302,000.00. Educational Program I would suggest to this meeting that consideration be given to in- stltute an educational program for credit union members and others. Monthly meetings could be held, devoting half of the time to pro- motional work, and the remaining portion to recreational program. I would also suggest short courses for treasurers and directors of credit unions to be given in co-operation with the St. Dunstan's Extension Department. We must develop leaders among the younger people in all sections both for our credit unions and our co-operative associations. The old- er people are gradually leaving on account of age. etc. and we must have leaders to take their places. We must also strive at our an- nual meetings to appoint directors who will be interested in credit union work who will be willing, and be in a position to devote sometime to managing and pro- moting the advancement of their credit union. we must create bet- ter facilities for credit union mem- bers by appointing sub-treasurers throughout the districts, whereby the members who are far away from the credit union office would be induced to save more regularly. A checking system for some of the larger credit unions should be investigated this year. some consideration should he given to the amalgamation of credit unions. in some districts we believe this would be feasible and advantageous and I would suggest that we devote some thought to this problem at this meeting. -The organization of the Share and Loan Department to conform with the National Credit Society should be considered. Priced from IJSSIMPSONW” mm Special Representative F. A. S. JONES Charlottetown service. Considerable field work has been done by your iieldman Mr. Joseph Maclsaac both among the credit unions and co-operatives. Forty- five study clubs were organized and most of these continued through- out the winter months. This work will no doubt be.re-viewed in Mr. I)El1IllS' report. The inspection of credit unions is far ahead of other years to date, fourteen credit unions having been inspected. The radio broadcasts given by Lorne Green in Canada and Gab- riel Hcater, in the United States, and sponsored by the Credit Union National Association and the (Tuna Mutual Insurance Society have aroused great interest both in Canada and the United States. These broadcasts will continue for the remainder of the year. There was also a series of broadcasts on credit unions sponsored by the Charlottetown Chapter. These broadcasts were very well received by the people. Such broadcasts by chapters and local credit unions should be encouraged. Mr. J. G.
