After stating ear business aad what he thought of the Unknown, Clow said that he was perfectly satisfied to meet Merritt. He had been engaged ina contest with Merritt before, and he was not afraid to meet him again. He said Merritt was a hard man to beat, and that if he won he would have to work for it. He said he felt in good condition himseif, and was confident of success. victory. Mr. | [f Merritt proved the victor,’ said Clow, “I will shake hands with him, and acknowledge it.”’ The track which has been laid out under Mr. Clow's own pee is a good one, being composed of tan-bark and saw-dust. The track measures twenty-five laps to the mile, and is about four feet broad, At the Jast walkiny; match held here, the contest- ants had t Mec on the bare floor, and measured thirty-three laps to the mile. The ditference being that in the’present case, the track takes in the largest part of the hall, the seats being arranged inside the track for the accomodation of those who attend. In the former match, those who witnessed it, were allowed to stand ontside the track. Or ‘Tuesday evening the Unknown in com- pany with Harry Hart, his backer, and a few others arrived here. This morning Finlay McNeill, was chosen referee and starter. Geo, Campbell of Summerside, scored for Unknown, and Henry Crossman of Bedeque, scored for Clow, Chas. Lafferty, Marker. At a few minu. tes to eleven, the men were called up, and a few remarks addressed to them by Mr. Me- Neill. At sharp eleven the men were sent off, Unknown took the lead closely followed by Clow. ne igen as they travel around the track appear to good advantage, and it would be hard tosay sone sent, whichof the twois likely togain the victory ‘There is a difference in the style and build of the two men. Clow’s tall and slightly bet form as he goes around the track is quite a contrast to that of the Un known. he Unknown is short and weil built, and as he goes around the track, with his head :lown, and body bent forward, he appears to be at home. Clow recognises his friends by aslight nod of the head and keeps at his old jog, while at a nod or a word from his backer the Unknown will ‘‘let out’ a little of his speed. For the first two hours there was no¢ much of a change in the respec- tive positions of the two men. Ata quarter to one, Clow left the track, but returned in a few minutes. Unknown took advantage of this, aud added three laps to his lead. On the appearance of Clow on the track, he came down to his old speed again. At the 2ist mile, Clow slipped and tell, striking the round rather heavily, but jumping to his eet in a second, was off again as though an accident had never happened to him. After being on the run until nearly two o'clock, the men stopped running and struck out on a walk. At twoo’clock Clow had gained on his opponent—Unknown being but 3 laps ahead. Juring the next two hours the Un- known spurted, and at four o ‘clock the score stood: Unknown, 24 miles, 11 laps ; Clow, 23 eas 23 laps. At tive o'clock, the Un kaown had increased his lead by 14 laps —the score standing : Unknown, 29 miles, 2U laps ; Clow 29 miles, 6 laps. Daring the evening Clow left the track two or three times. It is the general opinion that Ciow is holding back, and that during the evening he will put on some extra speed and run the Unknown for all he is worth. Music is supplied by an organ an! violin. Special despatch to the Hxraminer SUMMERSIDE, Sept. 23. At 11 o’clock last night—the end of first twelve hours—the score stood: Unknown, 71 miles, 17 laps. Clow, 71 miles, 3 laps. The men feel in good condition. There was a fair attendance. When the 12 hours finished there was great cheering. SumMERsIDE, Sept. 23. At eleven sharp this morning, the men were sent off—Unknown teok the lead. At one o’clock, Clow lessened the gap by 8 laps, score standing: Unknown 81 miles, 24 laps, Clow 81 miles, 8 laps. At a few minutes to one, Unknown left the track, but soon came on again, at two o’elock the score stood : Unknown, 86 miles, 20 laps, Clow, 86 miles, 9 laps. Unkhown leading by 11 laps. Me.
