Every city in the country is overcrowded with this ciass@f yhelpless young mea. They grow upontie farms with no idea of the trials aid tempta- tions that beset their class in the large They think they can live in the cities without the toil and drudgery they say isa partof farm life. There are many ways of living in a city, but there is but one honorable way, and that is surmounted withas many trials and hardships as earning one’s living ou the farm, and that is to earnithonostly, A yeung man without a trade will find thathe hasto work harder to make both ends meetinthe city than on a farm. The young man who thinks the world owes him a living and that the obliga- tion will be canceled in the cities, makes a mistake that is often learned too late. There is no more room for idlers in the city thanon thefarm. The cri- minals class receive some of its most vicious recuits from young men who thought they were too smart to be farmers, come to the city, found they had made a mistake, dropped into bad compeny, aod will end their lives on the ‘caffoll or in the penitentiary. No, young man, you are not too emari tor the farm. The smartest man that ever lived hadn't sense enough to reach perfection in farming. Be inde- peadest. While there is always some- ‘hing to do on a well-regulated farm, if mu hove a leisure moment, use it in iy or selling the many kinds of goods i will tind that are especially made ‘your benefit. Williams, the colored ralor of Ohio., late of Boston and later New York, is here, writes a Wash ston correspondent to the Indian lis Sentinel. Williamsis an _ inter- sing character. A few years ago he sdusted from an eastern college. nt to Cincinnati, studied law with .ifunso Taft, and about 1878 wes levted to the Legislature. He was quent, and, being the only colored cinber, attracted not a little attention. is is of medium size, slight build, pro- bably 38 years old, wears a mustache, is rather handsome, of a ¢ ypper_ color, lresses well and bears himself with dignity. At the Legislature he be- came rather intimate with Fleischmann, the great banker of Cincinnati, who was aiso'a member. Fleischmann is very wealthy, had a great deal of busi- nes#, sud employed Williams to act ag his Seeretary. Williams has much ubility, and bas great energy. He wrote au history of the colored race—two volumes. It was good. Heshowed it to Gov. Foster, of Ohio. and the latter was 80 racinated with it,that he advane- ed $5,000, it is said, to publish the books. Tue secoad volume is in press. From Ohio, Williams drifted east. He claimed to practice law in Boston and New York. He never made apy | money, so far as his acquaintances could ee, yet he always had plenty ofit. He made trips to the foreign countries, and with letiers fromthe President, Seere- tary Of State and other distinguished Americans, he was received by the Kings and principal rulers of the globe. Ho waslionized. Returning here he repiesented himself as being inter ested in opening the Congo country. Special Notices. Fk.
