In New Brunswick there is a law ,against Sunday excursions by rail and l steamer, but since, controversy:has arisen as to what is the strict mean- ling of the law. It appears that a local yacht club was making its ann- ual cruise on the St. John rive-r,aud the members stopped over Sunday at Gagetown, and having a chaplain with them, it was announced that he would on Sunday conduct an open air service for their benefit. Thereup- on a steamer from St. John took a party of excursionists to Gagetown on Sunday on the pretext of attending the open air service. At another point on the St. John River not far from Gagetown a camp meeting has been held annually for some years past, and excursions by 1 steamers have been also made on Sun- day to attend this camp meeting. Rev. Dr. 'Wilson well known through- out the Maritime Provinces, actingon behalf of the Evangelical Alliance, has written a putl=c letter to Attor ney General \Vhite in regard to the first of these excursions, the gist of which is the inquiry whether it is lawfiil? Dr. \Vilson thinks, and we 3 "agree with hini, that it is absurd to think that the people who sailed some Fl WI U , thirty iiilles and return did so for the A-:tent for P. E Island. Montana do their utmost to keen them obedient to the faith. With the incrlase in numbers has come _bolduess. and they have sent out about twenty mis- sionaries to different parts to propogaie ‘ and defend their views. By many the tyranny of the sy-item is being felt, and they are becoming restless. The schools conducted amorg iheni, fuller inter- course with others, the preaching the gospel within their reach, and the res- tr.c ions of the law, it is felt. will ¢ff.ct a change.
