“LETTERS: Storm Cancellation Dear Editor: Three cheers to the administra tion of UPEI! This is the first winter in my 5 years here that the ‘powers that be’ have been good enough to cancel classes during snow storms. In past years, they have not can- celled classes during storms, and all the students showed up, but no profs. Finally, we get to sleep in too! Gratefully yours, Robert Adams Challenger 25: Hindenberg Dear Editor: When Challenger 25 blew up January 28, 1986, a mission control commentator who was not looking at his monitor ironically said: “Obviously a major malfunction.”’ In stark contrast is Herb Morrison’s radio recording for Chicago’s WLZ of the Hindenburg crash at Lakehurst, New Jersey, May 6, 1937. In this found poem which juxtaposes the two commentaries Herb “fills in’’ the deathly vacu um. MISSION CONTROL: “T minus 10, 9, 8,7, 6 we have main engine start 4, 3, 2, 1. And lift-off, lift off of the 25th space shuttle mission and it oy clear the tower .. HERB MORRISON: = “‘Here it comes, ladies and gentlemen, , and what a sight itis. MISSION CONTROL: “Challenger, go at throttle up.”” DICK SCOBEE: “Roger, go at throttle up ......”” HERB MORRISON: __ The sunis striking the windows of the observation deck on the westward side ....Oh, Oh, Oh....! It’s burst into flames.”” MISSION CONTROL: “Obviously a major malfunction.” HERB MORRISON “It is burning, bursting into flames and is falling .... oh! This is one of the worst .... oh! There's no end to what he wants toleam. Yet Danny's no hermit, He really enjoys a good time. That's the problem. It's not that he sets out to drink too much, but once Danny starts he often forgets he has a limit, and then it’s too late.
