\ Scene 9 mickeyvpi‘ace‘ As any T.V. fan knows, V from seeing wartime movies, the aim of all naval com-._ manders was to have a "Happy" ship. The happiest ship this observer has ever seen was the 8.8. Prince “Edward as it brought back to P.E. Island the victor- ious Panther football team N and their semi-delirious fans. Why?...Because we beat X...we,beat them at their home grounds...we beat them on their fancy field in all the opulent surroundings... we beat them after it was said we didn't have a chance. The night before an Antigonish friend said to me "We beat S.M.U. last week and your guys lost to U.N.B....I'm too tender- hearted to go to a slaughter" Needless to say I gave him a phone call after the game. The way we won was part- icularly sweet too. The game started as thOugh we were going to be run right out of town. We had the ball \ first and, after going no- where on the first two downs, the snap back went Over Mike Read's head and X had the ball on our 30. Four plays later, Bob ,Mincarelli caught a touch— down pass and, after Dale Gullickson converted, we were behind 7-0 and jubilant ISLAND PANTHER CLUB Starting last'March series of organizational meetings was held by interested people in the Community and alumni interested in University ~ activities. A Charlottetown lawyer, Gordon Tweedie, was, chosen to head this group which was named the Island Panther Club. I This Panther Club is having its first general meeting of the season on October 6th, and we think that if they are to be an effective organiza- tion and able to carry out their stated purpose of ad- vancing athletics and other interests in our Universityy they have a hard job ahead of them. One of the primary ob— jectives of the Panther Club is to create general fan and alumni support similar to that which is enjoyed by_other Booster Clubs in the Maritimes. The only money available at the present time is derived from the $5.00 membership fee... and, as you know, MONEY TALKS. -Now, personally, we are tired of seeing mainland teams play- ing with boys in their line- ups who shohld be in U.P.E.I. uniforms...we do not blame the boys...if a person doesn't look after himself, who will look after him??? we do think, however, that we who should be backing our teams uP..should make a real effort .hometown fans leaned back ' in comfort to view the ex- pected continuance of X _ dominating play. There then ensued a most perculiar succession\of _. plays...5 penalties in a row against X! And they were 1-flagrant! we mean so obvious that even this inexpert observer could see them! Our penalty-aided offense \ was halted at their 20 yard line and Al Stoddard kicked a field goal to close the gap to 4 points. It appeared the half might end this way -when, late in the half, their Peter Bowler, with questionable judgement, attempted a pass to Bob Mincarelli but Doug Crossman picked it off and galloped across the goal line in fashion reminiscent of Secretariat...so the teams went to the dressing rooms for a rest with the Panthers leading 9-7. The second half belonged mostly to the defense until Doug Crossman, who played ‘ a strong two-way game took a Grant Canvin pass at the X 30 and once again, streak- ed across. When Al Stoddard, converted it was 16-7 and, due to our strong defense, the game ended this way. In such a victory it is meaningless to pick out an at retaining these athletes. we believe that if we had theSe boys playing for us, in our lineups, we would have little difficulty in walking off with both the hockey and football championships of these Atlantic Provinces... as it is, we may encounter some/ Ill trouble! \As we see it, from where we sit, the problem facing the Boosters comes from the limitations imposed by our physical plant...just suppos- ing they were so successful as to interest ZOOO‘CharIOtte— town fans in attending a hockey game...just imagine if 10 wanted to see a basketball game!!!! Either would create a ridiculous situation. Increased admission receipts would certainly go a long way to enhance our athletic poten— tial...but how can this ob- jective be achieved? Can peo— ple be interested in or asked to support financially teams that they can't see?‘“ 1‘ Last year the students over- whelmingly preferred that home hockey games be played in our own igloo and basketball in. our own gym...they wanted no part of going to the Forum for hockey or to the commodious Charlottetown Rural for basket— ball...even if student I.D.'s were honoured for admission. \We have no argument with their \ THE CADRE, Oct. 2, 1973, Page 7 outstanding player...it was a real team effort...but special mention should go to the several injured players who managed to overlook their pains and~aches and play the game. We would also like to com- ment’on the strong contin- gent of fans who took the chartered bus or made itby hook or by crook. They really perked the team up. It might also be observed that we would like to see more sup- port from Campus Police at Universities We visit... particularly to protect us from their own fans. In this instance some unpleasantness could have resulted...at least this is the story our two Campus policemen reported. In our happiness over the win let us skip lightly over the -loss to U.N.Bo which occurred at home the previous Saturday 17-1. We shrugged it off by saying it was only an exhib— ition game and we should have stood in bed. From these two games, I have come to a definite conclusion "IT IS A LOT MORE FUN WHEN YOU WIN THAN WHEN YOU LOSE." ‘ "photo by Jim Crombie" preferences but we wonder if they would prefer to go to our own icebox and see S.M.U. beat us 9-1 rather than go to the Forum and see us win 4—1?? It might be as simple as that. As an alternative we'd like to suggest that the "Powers that be" consider the possib- ility of arranging some M.I.HL games in the Charlotte— town Forumrand some basket- ball games in a larger seating gym to see if additional sup- port, both financial and fan- wise might be forthcoming. Anyhow, as we observed above, It's a lot more fun when you win than when you lose!!! For fans who stayed home, we remind you that all away foot— ball and hockey games will be broadcast over CSUR...7OO on your dial...within the Campus ...why not go to the Barn dur- ing the games and root your team, THE PANTHERS, on to a win besides that it is the best coffee in town. After all the years in radio, -putting a newspaper column together seems Qdd...like an R.C. priest finding himself conducting a serviCe in a synagogue.....................
