Pope, M.L.A., Gives Facts and Figures at the Joint Meeting at _ Miseouehe Tuesday Evening Last Mr. G. D. iPope, M.L.A., made an excellent speech at Mlscouciie on Tule day evening last. Mr. Pope sa :- " his is the first opportunity i ave had oi appearing on a plat- iorm at iMiscouche, and l wish to take advantage oi the occasion to thank the electors ior the strong support they gave me in the bye- election ior the Local House last January. I was not as well known at the country polls as in Suinmerside, and when the reflirns irom Mis- couche and St. Nicholas were re- ceived l was very proud oi the vote polled in this settlement. Most people tell you that figures are dry reading. but ii we want to understand the financial condition of our country, ii we want to know whether Mackenzie King has mau- aged the affairs of Canada in a busi- ness-llke manner, let us turn to the Public Accounts of Canada, a copy oi which I hold in my hand. What was the total expenditure ior 1925‘! lt was $339,903,000. ln 1914 (year before the War) it was $186,241,000, or an increase in 1925 over i914. oi $153,662,000, Now, bow about the cost oi the War? The War cost Canada $l,694,000,000. Who paid that? The Borden and iMeiglien Governments paid $1,687,- 000,000 oi that amount. From 1921 to 1925 Mackenzie King's Government paid just $6,- 960,000 oi War expenditure. Now. gentlemen, let us look at this thing square in the iace. The year 1916 was the second year oi the War. The expenditure oi Canada in that year under Sir IRobert ‘Borden was $339,702,000. in l1925 under Mac- kenzie King it was $339,903,000, or $200,000 more. ln 1916 ‘Borden paid out oi the above amount $166198,- 000 on War expenditure. Mac- kenzie King, in 1925, paid $506,931, ~= land service in Long Creek on Sun- m, $165,691_000_ Why did not M“; day at 3.00 p. m. Cordial invitation kenzie King reduce our taxes by t” a“: that amount? No, it was spent in extravagant administration and in keeping his party in power. He had the chance of'his lifetime to cui ,down the expenses oi this country. How has he done it’! Let us look at the Pulblic Ac- counts again. Mackenzie King came into power in 1921. The net debt oi Canada in 192i was $2,- 340.879,000. in 1925 it was $2,417,- 438,000, an increase since Macken- zie King came into power oi $76,- 559,000. That is not all, gentlemen. How about our National Railways? The railway expenditure oi Canada does not now appear in the Auditor Generals Report, nor are the da- tails given to the people oi Canada as they were under the Conserva- tives. Who started the system oi guaranteeing Railway Bonds? Since the Mackenzie King Gov- ernment came into power, Guaran- tee Bonds ior $114,500,000 have been issued. Oi these bonds 386500000 were for construction and operation expenses. Now, ii’ we add the Con- struction and Operation Expenses Bonds to the increase oi the Na- tlonul Debt since Mackenzie King canic into power we have a total deficit of $102,050,000. That, gentlemen, is the financial position of (‘flllililii ilurlng the iour years of Mackenzie King's Govern- mcnt. Now, Illr. McLean at previous meetings has referred to the sur- pluses of $35.!l9.‘i,593 in 1924, and of- $345,589 in 1925, as shown by Mr.l Robb iii the Public Accounts. lmay’ say here that the operating UXpGil-‘b; es oi’ the Government Railways, which under the Conservative ad-i ministratlons were voted by Parlia-' ment and always detailed in the Auditors’ Report are not now in- cludoil in the General Ledger in the Finance Department, and ii you will rcfcr to the certificate given on the balance sheet oi thePublic Ac- counts ior 1924 you will notice it reads entirely different from that given under the Conservative Fin- ance Ministers.
