There was no less of life. The building was entirely destroyed with its contents. The loss is $300,000, This theatre was the first in New York to produce H. M. 8S. Pinafore, and was noted for the great run which Patience by the same authors received at that house. B., have been sent out by the Militia Department. Applicants for enlistment must be bona fide British sub- jects, of good character, unmarried, be- tween the ages of eighteen and forty-five in good health, not less than five feet six inches in height and_ thirty-four inches round the chest. They will be re- quired to enlist for three years and pass a medical examination before attestation. The rate of pay will be $i per cay for staff sergeants, sergeants 80c.; corporals, 70c.; lance corporals, 50c.; buglers, 40c., and privates, 402. In addition to this, free rations, barrack accommodation and medical attendance will be given. Allow- ance is also made for good conduct pay. A free kit will also be supplied on joining. serena pens WhoxnIrec is in a state of excitement over the strike of drivers and firemen on the Canadian Pacific Railway. The wages were recently reduced and accepted by all except the engineers and firemen- whose monthly bonuses had been reduced from $12 to $7 per month respectively, to half thoee figures. On the 12th inst., a deputation waited on Sunt. Eyan and presented a schedule of wages whieh they said they were willing to accept. He ssid the schedule asked for greater wazes than before the monthly bonus had been reduced; however, he would forward their demand to General Manager Van Horne, and it would be about ten days before an answer could be got. The delegates said they would not? wait that lovg and would only give the company twenty- four hours to decide, after which the wlole matter would be referred to Mr. Arthur, president of the brotherhood of locomotive engineers of the United States, On Mr, Egan refusing to have anything to do with Arthur, he ins'ructed the master mechanics to issue the following order for all the men t> sign: ‘‘We hereby agree to accept employ- ment from the Canadian Pacific company at the rate of wages offered by the company in our present capacity.” Mr. Egan said if they did not wish to sign they might leave work.
