gravely told, preparing for war with
Germany. The preparations are on
auch a gigantic scale that when the
war comes, if it does come, the des-
truction of life and property may Ls
expected to fulfil the most sanguiue-
or sanguiuary-hopes of the foulest
fiend that gloats over the miaeries of
mortals. It will, for the time being
convert n very large section of this
peaceful, prosperous world into a
veritable bell and will leave its im-
press, ill maimed and distorted mor-
tals, on future generations. Canada
is being urged to contribute thirty-
five million dollars to the success
of the holocaust.
Many are asking why this thing
should take place and nobody knows;
nobody can say why. €X¢€P¢ that
Germany is building dreadnaughts
and must therefore be planning an in-
vasion ot l-Jnglnnd. And so we are
feverishly, hastily, madly building
our ships and our guns to prellafd
for the threatened invasion.
Now while the cause of such a cat-
astrophe is unknown and unknowshle
there are some things that are
known, that can be demonstrated
with mathematical accuracy, and
that ought to be carefully considered
in connection with the preparations.
During"`tli`e 'whole of the fiscal year
ending March 31st, 1912, CanadB'B
exports to Germany amounted in
round numbers to three and a half
million dollars. During the period
from March 31st to the close of nav-
igation on the St. Lawrence our ex-
ports to Germany amounted to ten
and a half millions. The phenomenal
increase is due to two causes, the

food supply. This dependence is bound
to increase with the years and as a
consequence Germany may soon lbs
expected to equal Britain ee a mar-
ket for food stuils. So much lor the
contribution of thirty-five million
dollars to fight Germany.
In addition to this Germany has
'for years been Britaln's ` most im-
portant foreign customer. Without
her trade with Britain it is doubtful
if Germany could exist, certainly she
would be infinitely poorer without it
and Britain would be very much the
poorer without Germany's trade. In
a few years, if normal conditions
continue, Germany will rank next to
Britain and the United States as a
market for Canada’s exports.
This is the country we are prepar-
ing to fight, that Greet Britain is
supposed to be preparing to H5111!
What proportion of the sanepeople
of Britain and Germany, think you,
gentle reader, is seriously expecting
this Armageddon? what proportion ls
personally interested in promoting
such a war? What proportion of the
people, not ol Britain and Germany
alone but of the whole civilized world
would regard such a war as the
blackest blot on the stained pages of
history?
If our newspapers, our parliaments,
and our chumhes placed more em-
phasis upon the growing trade, the
increasing interdependence, the mut-
ual friendship between Germany and
Britain and her colonies and less \1l>-
on the probability of war and the
preparation for it, the world's stag-
gering iaith in the reality and hon-
esty of Christian profession would be
greatly strengthened and the proba-
bility of such a war greatly diminish-
ed. .

thousand people were driven from the
province between the census of 1901
and that of 1911. Never satisfied
with existing conditions, their con-
tinual fault finding became a verit-
able contagion and spread discontent
and dissatisfaction among all who
came in contact with them. Had they
quit the country themselves it would
have been a merciful riddance. Had
they gone west they would have been
drummad out of the country for the
west has no place for ll knocker.
There they are bent on building up
the country and everybody is a
booster.
Besides being a contemptlble habit,
knocking is an egregiously asinine oc-
cupation because every knock to the
country or to the community is a
knock to the knocker himself. Take a
few typical cases.
A man sells his farm at a figure
which, compared with farm values oi
a few years ago, appears large. The
knocker, jealous of his neighbor’s
good fortune, immediately lifts up
his asinine voice and cries, in the
hearing of the purchaser too, that
the price is exorbitant, the farm i is
not worth it, the purchaser is simply
being robbed. Instead of rejoicing at
ills neighbor’s good fortune, instead
of realizing that an advanced price
for his neigbbor’s farm means an
advance in the value of every farm
in the neighborhood, he, through
sheer littleness of soul, must, if
possible, prevent the benefit to his
neighbor.
This variety of knockers is so com-
lnon in some sections that a man
wishing to sell his farm or an animal
oil his farm must conduct his negot-
iations with thc strictest privacy to
prevent the knocker from gettinghis
serpent tongue into the deal and
spoiling it..
This is che vnrlccy than looks with
jealous eyes upon thc growing pros-
perlty of his neighbor. A man, by
hard and intelligently directed work
builds “D s business out of nothing.
While he continues to be nothing,
while he remains picturesquely poor
he is tolerated. When he be-
gins to enlarge his premises and to
declaring fromthe housetops that ‘so.
and-so is making too much money to
be honest and forthwith he and his

investod in the fox business which
has turned the-eyes oi the world in
our direction; millions are being
spent in developing the cities in our
sister provinces which are our near-
est market. The man who fails to see
in these things a coming boom, who
turns green at the thought of some-
body elss making more out of it than
he will, should leave the country
quietly and make room for those who
are looking for a rich, healthy and
prosperous country to live in.

'A gentleman who recently returned
from a trip to Western Canada re-
marked that one of the drawbacks to
an otherwise exceedingly pleasant
journey was the fact that in seven
out of ten places stopped at en route
it was not: safe to take a drink of
cold water because ot either the pre-
valence of typhoid and other water
diseases or of the presence of nskall
in the water. Cold water is not us-
ually regarded as a luxury but it is
one of the necessaries _of life and the
country or city that cannot offer its
visitors e. drink of absolutely safe
water is poor in one oi the greatest
assets. Prince Edward Island cannot
perhaps, legitimately, offer its guests
strong drink but it can oder what is
much more highly prized even by
drinkers, a drink of absolutely pure
cold water.

Following is the address presented
to Wilbert McDonald, Charlottetown,
as referred to in yesterday’s Guardi-
an:
Chairman & Rev. Fathers:-I have
been called upon tonight by inquest,
to make thc presentation address for
the members of the bowling leage of
the League of the Cross to Wilbcrt
McDonald. While I feel that this is
a great honor I may also add that it
has its sad and pathetic side. Mr.
McDonald, I know I am voicing the
sentiments of the members ol the
League of the Cross, when I say that
we rejoice ill the fact that fortune
has smiled on you and we know that
the honorable position that has been
tendered to you -by the greatest little
government in the whole world was
tendered to you with the knowledge
that you were competent and had
the ability to fill the position. It is
with pride that we the members of
the League of the Cross and also the
sons of denr old Prince Edward Is-
land arc able to add one more name
to the long list of sons and daugh-
ters of the Garden of the Gulf who
have torn themselves away from their
homes, fliends and happy associa-
tions to till honorable positions in
many parts-of the world.
While we know that this step on
your part is only one of the step-
ping stones to the success you so
richly deserve, for as we look back
over the past we see in you the ideal
young man, and cven in the sadness
of your departure we are more than
consoled by the fact that it is your
own personal life and conduct that
brings you this reward. To tell you,
that we the members of the League
will miss you is only half telling the
story, words utterly fail me in try-
ing to ezprcss the sorrow we will all
feel in losing one oi our most esteem-
ed members. And yet mingled with
our sorrow is joy and gladness and
best wishes for your future. And now
Mr. McDonald in consideration oi the
high esteem in`which you are held by
the members of the League of the
Cross I have the honor in behalf of
the members to present you with
this little travelling companion. We
feel that it will bring back to you
in your new ileld of labor visions of
the League, the' good fathers who
watched over you and advised you
in the tender years of your life and
