OTTAWA,-Tlie public attitude of distrust towards business which is the result of the general social unrest and discontent ut the working of economic laws in relation to the cost of living found some reflection in the general spirit which pervaded the great Liberal convention this week. The tariff resolution permitted an outword expression of this, but when all the factors are taken into con- sideration it is a question as to whether the low tariff element gained any ground beyond what might have been reasonably conceded in a prac- tical analysls of the whole political situ-ation. - Throughout the tariff debate senti- ment ranged all the way from the most radical Cobdenlte utterances to the counsels of moderation and vague- ness urged by some who were ap- parently afraid of 'the strong pro- tectionist sentiment which exists in spots all through the party. It is no secret that there was a pretty strong fight in committee before the low tariff sentiment of the West prevail- ed. At all events it was not all- embracing enough to please "Honest" John Oliver, Premier of British Co- lumblt, who seemed to think that it was too sectional in its incidence. Lack of information Kirk Caineron, a Montreal manu- facturer and friend of the late- Sir Wilfrid Laurier, tried to give the con- vention sume salutary advice on their platform-mak-izng efforts, but he got very little hearing. He warned them that they were attacking the tariff In a niost unscientiflc manner, fram- lng this tariff policy wltliout adequate knowledge in information, and it would béjust another case of pledges which could never be carried out, with consequent dissutisfnctioii, but the turbulent spirits from the West were in no mood to listen to that counsels of modification, and he effected noth- ing. The radicals appear to have a. firm hold on the party, and their in- fluence has prevailed for the present. Platforms, however, as a cynic once said, are niude “to get in on, not to stand on"; und, as in Shakespeure’s ti-me there used to be mush humor please the grouiidling," so _now we may discount some things which went through the convention - wiith the knowledge that the Vt/est had to be _appeased with concessions, which muy be ii long time before they sro ever crystallized into legislation. Evident- ly much would depend on the attitude und mentality of the man chosen to guide the parties' destinies and do- liberations hereafter. Perhaps the one thing most clearly revealed by the proceedings of the convention was the need for some adequate knowledge regarding the tariff and the condition of Canadian industry. Mr. Cameron pointed out to the convention that the committee quata knowledge regarding the items involved in the resolution. “How can you make ii tariff intelligently with- out lnformatlon?" asked Mr. Cameron. Echo answered, "Howl" But that was the only sane answer he got to the question. Apparently the majority of the delegates did not know-or care. » lt must be borne in mind that these resolutions are put to the meeting in the most informal manner possible. They are scttled\ by it few men in committee, put by rapid-fire method to the meeting, and assent apparent- ly taken for granted in ever-y case, the chairman( announcing “carried” without any further formality oi- dis- cussion. Mr. King and Business The selection of Mr. McKenzie~King` was largely influenced by his brilliant speech advocating the adoption in its entirety of the methods and principles in regard to labor Incorporated in the peace conditions. With this .there might not be so much to quarrel, but the fear wh'lch the business world will probably hnve of the new Liberal leader will be that he will come to the lendership und eventually pos- siby to the hend of the `Governinent of (Iaiiadu after ii long period of years spent in nn acudeinie sphere. and rc- i-iovcd from prnctf-i-al conditions; and it will wait expcctantly and soine\vhnt aiixiously to sec whether he can nlso bring to tho solution of Cniiada’s ser- iiuzr proialeins the practical turn of iiiiirl which is so necessnr-y at this tf-ine.-T.M.F. _Z_;-___._...._,._ A gloom has bccii cast over Rustico Doucette, (nee Emilia Blanchardi. which cc:-iirreii on the 28th July at the County Hospital, St. John, N.B., where she had gone for her health.
