A GREAT OPPORTUNITY-
Those who for years have desired a
complete and final victory over the
liquor trafhc can hardly fail to see
what a great opportunity will be
offered to the electors of Canada on
29 th September next. They are not
only privileged to say whether not
they want a law that will foibid they
manufacture, importation, and sale of
intoxicants. Any man might say
that any day of the year. But on
this great occasion what every man
says-the “yes” or the “no” of each
individual elector will be registered
by the sworn Jliicials of the country
appointed for that purpose and will
form a part of the public record' of
the country. Ever after it will stand
_emblazoned on. the pages of Canadian
history that on the 29th of Septem-
ber, 1898, the majority of the electors
of Canada said _“yes” or “no” on the
question of prohibition.

will be big with the fate of thousands
yet unborn. ' Never before was a
nation called to render its decision in
this way on so great a_ question. We
have had city and county votes on
the Scott. Act; we have had provincial
plebiscites, ' but now it is the great
Dominion that will speak, not for -any
section or division of the country but
for all Canada. A million free born
*Canadians are called to speak. The
government of the count-ry has willed
it; the parliament of Canada has made
it a. law, both parties concurring, and
l the country bids that on 29th Sep-
tember you shall leave all other
business, go to the polls and by' “yes”
or “no” say whether you desire pro-
hibition or not. The country calls
and all loyal subjects ought to obey.
,Every man who has a. vote is morally
bound to vote yes or no on that day.
This is a. great opportunity because
iof the effect of the verdict that will
be given. If the majority is in favor
of prohibition not onefbut both part-
ies iu the state are bound to give
us prohibition, otherwise the plebiscite
would be but a. mockery. Under
y our free constitution the will of the
people is the supreme law. Tl e
settled purpose of the people must
prevai‘. If the majority should say
“No” on the 29th then farewell to
i prohibition l For it would be long
before the opportunity would be
_given to reverse the verdict.
THE GUARDIAN is well satisfied that
A the great majority of the electors of
Canada who vote will vote “yes” on
29th September.` Our only fears are
that too large a. proportion of the
electors will not go to the polls.
Therefore every lawful means should
be used to induce every elector to
,attend and cast his vote for prohibi-
tion. Pastors and churches have a
solemn duty in this matter. The
Templars, Sons of Temperance,
Women’s Temperance Unions and
other temperance bodies have in the
plebiscite an emergent callto activity.
These bodies have done a. great work
in preparing the soil and sowing the
seed- Remember that 29th Septem-
ber is harvest nay! See to it that
the votes are gathered in on that day.
Otherwise the toil, the preyvrls une,
